Is version 3.0 worth playing now?

I want a 'space' fix over the holiday period and it's between this and "Starpoint Gemini 2", which is a simpler concept but easier to pick-up and play. Or so I'm led to believe.

Few questions not played much since the release of x stillbirth after being very disappointed.

Are most of bugs are ironed out involving the plot?
Can you automate traders yet?
Is the economy fixed yet as it seemed like a broken mess?
Is fleet management better? As seemed like completely useless when released.

Bumpity bump...

So I finally decided to bite the bullet and play this, at least the main campaign, as it's been lying dormant on my HD since Xmas 2014.

Very hit and miss, still buggy and just about everything is far less intuitive than previous X-games. The economy is poorly implemented with trading being a slow ponderous PITA (no SETA as apparently the devs regarded this as a cheat), random missions few and far between and very hard to see icons attached to stations. The passenger ones are quite laughable as you actually have to dock, walk into and round the station to find the person and "invite" them to board (prefaced by a surly response when you click on them) all the time the mission clock ticks down. You need to do side missions to subsidise the main story but after certain events about a third of the way in, travel in Albion becomes virtually impossible as everyone is shooting and spamming missiles at you.

Anyhow, that aside the main reason for posting is advice on the mission where you need to build a URV forge in De Vries. For some reason the mission guidance arrow has vanished from the HUD so no way of seeing where the station should be built. According to other bits I've Googled there should be some sort of pyramid marker in space which is where you need to click and get the Construction ship to start work. However for the life of me I can't find this, it doesn't appear to show on any of the maps either. Can anyone who's got this far, point me in the right direction on this one please?

Edit: Don't worry figured it out, it's the tiny little box shape icons that appear at certain locations.

I was a huge fan of the X3 games but I gave up on rebirth shortly after release due to all of the problems. Might give it another go so how is it these days?

You still can only fly one ship i'm assuming? (not a deal breaker but i loved capping ships in the previous games)
How much do the expansions add to the game? Are they required to actually make the game good?
Does the highway system still have that awful mini game where you have to tailgate ships to get a speed boost?
Do you still have to walking around on stations looking for npc's to talk too? (this was probably the worst part of the game)

I have not touched it in ages but still keep an eye on it and the modding side of things.

As far as I know the one ship limit is staying for this game but is changing for the next, I have yet to play the expansions but the change/added features list are large for both. (videos on their channel I believe showing what they bring). Highway system has changed a lot from release, not sure how it plays now. You can still walk around stations but you can talk to most npcs now from your ship I believe.

Haven't touched this in months - gave up in disgust when I finally scraped enough credits together to buy an escort cruiser, only to find it had been destroyed en route to rendezvous with me in De Vries. Previous play through aborted having made it a bit further only to find I couldn't find the parts needed to advance the game.

On both attempts it was still necessary to doctor the save file, in order to get the URV forge and extension built.

So getting the emailshot from Egosoft the other day has partly rekindled my interest but unless it's bargain basement price or a Steam sale pops up at Easter I'm loath to part with full price.

Tempted to see what is said in this thread about the expansion and of course over at Rogueys site, which is pretty much the best place for honest and pragmatic opinion of the title. (Ego's forums by all accounts being heavily moderated/censored).

I wouldn't say that, plenty of posts and topics about the issues with the game including plenty from my self (and other moderators / modders and oddies)when it first came out. The issue is the large number of new people that post hating the game in such a way that breaks the rules of their forum which thankfully do allow it to be one of the friendliest and nicest places on the internet. Something a large number of "steam kids" (Only way I can think of describing them) cant get there heads around.

It still seems like such a clunky unintuitive game that in now way sucks me in like X3:TC and AP did. Rebirth certainly has some cool moments, like being in control of a huge capital ship fighting it out...but this isn't enough to keep me playing anymore. I got a refund on the most recent DLC.

Finally dragging myself off Fallout 4, decided to start over with a new game in X-Rebirth 4.0 and the HoL add-on. Well it didn't take long to see that Egosoft have completely nerfed the economy. The previous method of buying scrap metal and turning it into alloy for a good profit has been dis-assembled by virtue of most vendors only stocking 7-10 units instead of the previous 150-200 units. When it takes 1000 units to make one alloy, that's in the region of 100 trading calls, allowing for the bits found on stations.

Rant mode on:

I did read in the patch notes they were "adjusting" the over supply of scrap metal, but flippin' Nora this isn't an adjustment - it's a rout. Of course over nerfing is nothing new for Egosoft (they did it with ships in X3 and Terran Conflict) post release, but at what point can you start to argue they are completely altering the game experience the customer paid for?

However I bet they haven't fixed the buggy URV Forge etc. construction elements in the later part of the campaign.

:Rant mode off.

All this is likely to do is encourage people to hack the save game file and give themselves the credits we would otherwise have.

You just sound miffed that you cant get easy credits no more lol. Work for your credits man work. :D

Not at all...

For starters cash is very hard to make in this game. Trading with your freighter(s) is so slow and with such low profit margin as to be barely worthwhile. Many of the BB missions require the Skunk to have speed upgrades (courier or passenger) and better weapons/armour (assassination/escort). While the scrap metal exploit may have been a bit OP there was certainly no need to reduce it to being virtually worthless. It's one thing nerfing a freemium tablet game, quite another something bought and paid for.

And I'm no stranger to grinding, whether it's a strategy game or latterly FO4 where you build up from pretty much nothing. But at least it's fair and they don't suddenly change the game dynamic to give you just two pieces of ammo in a box instead of 10, which is the percentage change here.

If Egosoft want people to engage with this flawed piece of junk, making it harder to get started is not the way to achieve that.

All i did to get money when i used to play it was scan/ping for containers in systems and flog the rewards, was a bit slow but better than doing poxy generic missions the x games usually have when not doing main plot. Couldnt be bothered trading myself when i tried it either or do anything like build stations. Grew bored of it when i realised theres no decent side missions other than plot i.e voice overs, interesting ppl to meet and do odd jobs for etc. And the very limited stuff u can upgrade ur ship with, basically maxed the skunk within a short time cos it was so cheap to do as theres nothing really worth upgrading due to such limited upgrade options.

Still think x2 was the best game they made egosoft i mean. Had the stylish ui, interesting bb, still had interesting manual docking. Etc. Might replay that one one day soon, as ever since its been more gfx and space station building than gameplay imo.

Terran conflict was my favourite. This game had so much potential, but they completely blew it. I did have some cool moments docked with my capital ship watching it in full action though.

Having posted on the Egosoft forums about the scrap metal nerf, appears this was done due to issues the amount of materials in the Universe were having (or something). However, to be fair the new Bulletin Board system which you can call up from within the cockpit seems to have more and greater variety of missions than before. With taxi missions grossing ~200k credits per run and clearing a minefield ~400-600k credits per mission I guess that offsets the fewer resources at junk dealers.

Apparently the alloy from scrap metal is also required for weapon crafting so should be kept hold of rather than sold.
