Eight months later - R8 Delivery day!

Hopefully yours has been more reliable than my friends. He changed from the v8 to v10 (I personally prefer the sound of the v8) and ended up needing a clutch replacement early on in the v10. I was hoping that they had improved the reliability over the v8. One thing that is an absolute must in these, get a custom exhaust :)

Manual or S-Tronic? I don't really consider clutch failure a sign of poor reliability, its wear and tear item.

So has anything else failed on it?

Any updates JP, review?

Noticed V10's are around 65k now so potentially on my radar. :D
Had any issues so far?

No real updates other than I do love driving it, V10 behind you and a manual gearbox is heaven :D

Just need some better weather, these Conti 5P tyres and cold, wet weather is a nightmare!

I've never been that blown away by these when I've seen them in passing, a friend has a V10 in white. Yours however looks amazing in this colour! Best choice of interior and gearbox too I feel.

Nice one :-)

At least you have more grip than most. Damp + these temperatures in the SLK55 equals wheel spin upto about 50/60mph at the moment.

You see it is the one advantage of having a lowly 375BHP Carrera S, even in these cold wet conditions it just puts the power down, traction is amazing. Off the line no problem, wide open throttle anywhere in second gear no problem, the grip is mind boggling.

JP get the MPSS as they should help a lot! :)

In 2012 I know the V10 got DSG style R-Tronic, so what was the R-tronic previous to that, do you know?

Yeah MPSS are on my list :)

Pretty sure all R-Tronics are the same E-Gear Gallardo box with different software, it isn't until the S-Tronic that it went dual-clutch.

Could be wrong though, not really looked into it as that box is horrid in my opinion and the S-Tronic is just boring for a sports car unless you just want to daily drive it in stop start traffic.

Edit:
Having a look, the older R-Tronics could be like the E-Gears and newer 2012 on R-Tronic is like the LP560/570 update then S-Tronic is the dual clutch that the Huracan got.

My Pirelli P zero tyres don't help. My last slk had them on also and the grip was terrible until I replaced them. No idea why Mercedes insist on putting them on, I have never been a fan. I look forward to replacing them with something with more grip.

Can't give you any more information about the gear box, I know no more.

A lot of Porsche talk for an R8 thread. Start your own thread if you want to talk about them so much..

How about tough luck and no! :)

JP, see Audi how two used V10 R8's, both manuals, one blue, one red, both under 65k from dealer, never realised they got to this price.

Quite a stretch but seriously considering one, question is do you think over the next 2-3yr they could still lose another 15-30k value? Seems the V8 version of similar year are not much less, so V10 has being hit harder, if I did go for one I categorically do not want a V8, I want something quicker than the 911, the V8 is not and the V10 most definitely is much quicker. :)

The V10 is bound to lose value in that kind of range over the next couple of years. I would be genuinely surprised if it didn't. After that, who knows how low they will go.

Nobody really knows, especially with the manual box and with the next R8 not having the option, V10 manual cars may hold their value well as they are also quite a rare combination.

The new R8 is due in 2015. Might be worth seeing how it will affect prices of the old R8. Though I don't see them dropping too much, if at all.

Could be a good shout. Though I have a good chance of good discount when buying from Audi as well, so if I can get a further 10% or so off the price could be a big help there.

Whatever I change to as and when won't be until early-mid next year, the 911 has being chosen by Evolve tuning as their project car, so its going to be getting some free goodies and tuning in January, so any change shall be after March. The R8 V10 is right at the hard to afford end of the scale but just about doable with some help from the bank manager. :D

Have you shelved the e60 M5 idea Gibbo?

Damn! Sorry morguk, I've mentioned BMW now! :p

Nope, the shortlist in essence is BMW M5, Audi R8 V10, 2013 Shelby GT500, R35 GTR or brand new Mustang. Yep my car choices are completely random, make no sense at all. :D

And diddums were talking about BMW's, so what do you think of M5's mate? ;)

I wanted a red car after I had the blue one as that was two in a row and I refuse to buy white black or grey, orange is a bit much and green didn't look right.

Wait, you forgot about pink and went straight to red? What were you thinking? :p
Great choice in the red. Interior looks lush too. My only suggestion would be to get alloys with black highlights on the outward facing silver parts. So overall they look slightly darker, with silver highlights. Then it would be (marginally more) perfect! (IMHO ;))

I can't imagine how great it must feel to take delivery of one of these. I get excited when the postie shows up at the door to deliver household items I've got on Amazon subscribe and save. If I took delivery of one of these my excitement gauge would blow a gasket! :D

I’m not a car person at all. However I walk past a few A̶8̶ EDIT: R8's regularly and every single time I have to stop what I’m doing, admire it for a moment, deliver a chat up line or two, then leave it my number. They’re just so beautiful!

Yes, took the finance deal, 11k dealer contribution, trade in GTR at 53 odd, 3 years 600 something and 40 odd at the end. OTR price with the contribution was 115k so with interest total payable will be back at the full 126k.
May pay off some of the loan amount next year so I have some more equity in it and less monthly but it isn't an issue.

Only had it a few days and already most people I meet have asked how much it cost, how much is insurance and how much is servicing.

As others have said, thanks for being candid and sharing this info. I appreciate the insight of a real world scenario for how an item like this is actually purchased and financed.

It's one of the reasons I love forums. In the real world it's highly unlikely I'd ask a stranger how much something like this cost, let alone how it was paid for due to it being regarded as taboo or impolite to ask. Heck, I probably wouldn't ask my good friends or family how it was financed if they bought one. But I enjoy finding out the details like this so I can keep things in perspective and figure out if it's actually something that may be achievable for me one day.

I’m glad you paid the extra 0.18% for cruise control.

Seems like a bargain when you look at it that way :D

Thanks for sharing! Hope you enjoy it :)
