Electric Hobs, talk to meh.

Out of curiosity here, would you have any comeback on the landlord, considering it was his neglect that has caused you to have such high bills, and you say you've already reported many problems with it?

So how did you use so much gas?

I don't know for sure. I'm not much of a plumber / DIY man and fix computers for a living so all that kind of stuff is out of my field anyway.

The fact is though, since moving here in 2009 we've been very happy with everything bar the boiler and the heating of the property.

We've had British Gas out in the first year quite a number of times, a sufficient amount of times to even prompt the letting agent to remark (when I saw him a couple of months ago) that the LL would be better off just replacing the boiler.

I don't think the boiler has been serviced during our time here, we had a Gas Safety Check in January this year but that's not the same as a service is it?

As well as this water leak we've had to manually adjust the pressure on the boiler ( the tap connected to the boiler pipes ) which we shouldn't have to be doing as Tenants.

I don't know the exact age of the boiler but I suspect it's knocking on around 15 years now, maybe longer. It makes weird rattling and knocking noises from time to time as well.

The letting agent is good to us generally, it's just that the LL is a pain to get hold of, but having said that his daughter is now in charge so the letting agent should be able to get in touch with her a lot easier.

Perhaps as a good will gesture more than anything, I definitely feel that the boiler has caused our bills to rise exponentially in the past few months so I will take it up with him once we've got a new boiler installed.

Have you checked what tarrif on. You post makes it sound like you haven't got a clue so don't look at these things. If not I apologize. Just comes across that way.
You need to find out where the gas is going, or change to a non rip off tarrif. One or the other. No way you should be using that amount with no heating.

If nothing else, write down the metter reading every hour when ever possible and see if it's spiking, or constant use. That could point you in the right direction.

Domestic Standard. I think I'll be doing that with the meter tariff from now on.

Well, I've just read that under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 it states:

The landlord is responsible to maintain installations for the supply of:

Water

Gas (servicing once a year by a registered CORGI gas fitter)

Electricity

Sanitation

Space heating and heating water

- We haven't once had the boiler serviced since residing here from October 2009. I think the letting agent has some explaining to do.

We had a electric hob at our old house and it was awful i hated using the thing, it was either too hot or too cold i just gave up using it in the end, her indoors was a bit better with it but she admits it was awful.

We now have a gas hob and electric oven in this house, perfect combination :)

I have had electric hobs in my past two houses and they have been carp carp carp. Takes ages to come on, take ages to cool down, don't even get very hot.

As others have said, gas hobs are infinitely better than electric hobs, but I have heard great things about induction hobs. I'd imagine gas hobs to be cheaper than electric hobs though?

My first question to you would be, "Has your current gas hob ceased to function?" If not then it is false economy investing in a new electric hob as you will not see the savings for some considerable time once you factor in the cost of installation and the initial outlay (unless of course you plan to try and flog our old hob somehow).

What saving are you on about when electricity costs more?

The fact the performance is worse it puts you off cooking? :p

Gas for a hob, use a lincat comercial at work with 6 on ( same as the hairy bikers used on their mum knows best progames ) if they swapped to electric i wouldn't be happy.Use a tradional morrocan cay tajine, wouldn't be able to on a induction hob, cook with fire.

What does a Boiler Service entail then guys? Duration of work, work involved etc.?

I took this upon the letting agent who replied back that a Gas Safety Certificate was the service... a lad came out in January and was here for 5 minutes maximum, checked a few things, turned hobs on, checked the boiler here and there and was gone...

That's not the same as a service is it?

When I've had the boiler check it's taken around 30-45 minutes.

Right, after finding out how high our gas bills are I've decided to get an electric hob and am after something under £200, preferably as cheap as possible but something that will last.

Any help much appreciated as I've never purchased one before.

Thank you.

Much love.

Unless your gas hob is behaving like a flamethrower, I doubt the hob is making that much difference.....
