I'm 16 and I'll be going to college or sixth form in september- but my dad earns over 30k a year so I'm not entitled to EMA. I think this is wrong as most people on EMA will only spend it on booze etc and they don't have to work! I have a part time job and I will be needing to buy travel and books etc.

Will I get found out if I only put my mum's income so I will be entitled to £30 a week?

This is a subject thats really bad. I will be able to get EMA, But my mum is no dosser. She works 9-5 mon-fri sometimes even saturdays. She has her own driving school. Another thing they are giving are these things called G2G cards where you get £40 on them a month
to spend on the cinema etc. I think they should be giving these cards away to people who achive there predicted grades. I won't waste my EMA money though. It will go towards petrol, books, food, etc.

if you have a job and your rents earn 30+ k then surely you can afford a few books :/

Since when did you have to buy books for school anyway?

The money isn't designed for people to be able to afford anything, it's just to try to get chavs to go to 6th form. However it doesn't work, a few chavs go and get kicked out or drop out, everyone else who was going to go to 6th form anyway just spends it on video games or mp3 players and the like.

revision guides where about it.

Although at A level you can buy your own text books if you want to get the extra info.

Although if your doing that then i doubt you would be wasting money drinking etc.

EMA being means tested is just wrong. Either every kid at college should get it or nobody should.

All benefits should be means tested. What is the point of giving money away to people who don't need it? The real issue is if EMA should even be paid at all.

I agree that it's stupid. My mum and dad are separated, and I lived with my mum during my A-Levels, and as such I got the £30 a week even though my dad's minted. Kept me in Xbox games though :p

they WILL find out

i promise you

ema was a pilot scheme when i first went ot college

parents complained that either all kids got it or none at all

i think its biased
it does help
but £30 a week is a lot of money to spend on books and pencils

one guy i went to school with just brought £30 worth of pot a week

Is it up to £30 a week yeh?

So the more your rents earn the less you get?

I might just scrape it tbh, but i can see it being handy for traveling and stuffs, like adult bus fare is a joke, almost 3 quid for a return, and when i get a car (if i can afford insurance, £2000 for a 1.2l, pfffft) petrol ect.

:D me too.

Great thing is me and my brother qualify for all these income based grants and benefits etc for uni/school etc.

not because my parents have been scrounging scum, but because my dad worked hard, and has now retired early, (mum works part time) yet still has lot's of savings /investments.

and goes to the trouble to understand all the tax forms, etc so can squirrel away the maximum amount allowed to be tax free etc every eyar :)

Shows you can be sensible with your money and still earn the fruits of your labor + government, aid when you old.
