Emergency test.. today!

Emergency messages to your phone are fairly commonplace here because, you know, it's pretty handy to be notified if a volcano, tsunami, or earthquake is up to shenanigans.

Same in Japan with similar natural disasters and North Korean testing missiles. Similarly same in S. Korea.

This is a great system but I hope there's never a real situation which means they have to use it.

Yeah, it seems very useful for serious emergencies etc... problem is that when you have a new toy like this some people will want to use it for all sorts of things.

I've heard stories about people in places in Canada all getting woken up, TV broadcasts being interrupted etc.. because some kid has gone missing etc.. I couldn't imagine that working too well in the UK - plenty of missing kid incidents involve care homes and the kid coming back the next day etc.. And of course, if this stuff gets used too frequently for more mundane, day to day stuff, then people might take less notice if there actually was some serious bomb threat in the area or incoming missile or whatever rare but potentially devastating event they want to warn about.

Kid who cried wolf is all it will likely turn into here, what emergencies do we actually have?

I reckon they want to use it for Covid alerts.
I reckon they want to use it to increase the fear level now people are sick to death of covid and being treated like cattle

the whole countries been ran on fear since 2020

There have been some kind of strange goings on lately - I'm sure it is just regular stuff but makes me wonder casually what they are preparing for. National alert system, pushing a raft of emergency powers, etc. under the cover of COVID that extend far beyond anything relevant to COVID, increasing nuclear arsenal, rushing new navy task forces into action, massive overnight helicopter exercises country wide (supposedly part of Lightning Force 21 and Kukri Dawn but far larger scale than those exercises were supposed to be) and generally a higher level of activity of military and law enforcement stuff (maybe largely G7 related perhaps but seems more widespread).

A just in case scenario. Better to having working planned systems rather than not having them.

Indeed I'm all for a reasonable level of readiness - but this government rarely puts the effort and expense into this stuff precautiously - it is usually after the fact or when they absolutely can't ignore a potential threat.

maybe our government thinks having a strong military force it can project around the world is a good way to negotiate trade deals etc.
I guess a lot of countries would like protection from china right now and their fishing fleets or a friend for when china goes further than it already has

Not hidden under the 'Advanced' section that you have to click to make it expand?

Nope. I have only 3 further menus, App Icon Badges, Lock screen notifications and more notification settings which also do not contain anything along the lines of advanced or emergency. Seems to be only findable via searching my settings. The icon that appears with the search seems to suggest that it's actually in the smart assistance menu and not notifications menu.
