Emigrating to New Zealand

I know a fair few people who've visited NZ and all of them without exception say it is a great place to go, however they also admit it isn't massively interesting in that the place itself isn't tremendously lively. If you've got something to keep you occupied then good luck for going there but otherwise you might find it a shade too sedate.

If you are into playing pool then you might want to be aware of the "down trousers" rule when getting 7 balled/grannied. :)

We have that rule in Australia too!

Many an unsuspecting Pom has been caught unawares... :D

Our EOI was selected last week, just waiting for the paperwork for the ITA :)

Wife has a job to go to in Auckland, hoping to get out there later this year, possibly September :)

Cannot wait to get out of this country!

Cannot wait to get out of this country!

I hate to point this out but its not that different!

* Direct taxes are lower but then you have to pay extra for garbage collection health care etc
* Petrol is cheaper however MOT's more expensive
* Houses are a lot less however so are most wages
* Auckland/Wellington less people than London however just as stupidly busy
* No polish/European people stealing "our" jobs, just the Chinese etc
* Less selection of shops/businesses

The only way its a lot better is if you live out in a small town (quality of living) however that gets boring really quickly if you like going out a lot etc

We're looking initially at Christchurch since finding jobs there will be easier than where we actually want to live (on the Banks Peninsula).

As for the money side of things, we're not going there for a better quality of life in the sense of having more disposable income. Between us, me and the missus earn £150k per year (pre-tax) but we're both country people at heart and we're also planning a family and the idea of trying to raise kids in this country does not appeal to us.

We are both outdoors people, we love hiking, paragliding and (when snow permits) snowboarding. My missus is also planning to run a small horse yard in 5-10 years time and trying to do that here is not practical. Neither of us are the clubbing type and much prefer having friends round rather than going out on huge p-ups.

It is a much quieter country that's for sure but that is a lot of the appeal and it's as much about what NZ can offer as what the UK can't.

Ultimately, it might not go how we hoped, whether that be immediately or in 20 years but we can always go somewhere else and I'm thinking it's better to take the chance now when money allows rather than stay here and wish in ten years time that we'd given it a shot.

Baz - that's great news mate, how long did it take for you to hear back?

Maybe not that different, but different enough to be a challange, a change and to do what we want, you can never get away from taxes etc. but at least New Zealand is run by an elected New Zealander, unlike the UK which is run by an unelected scotish ****** who screws us over every chance we get, oh and we are in an even worse state due to the EU....

oh, and NZ has a better Rugby team :p

I've also been looking at emigrating to NZ. Is that £150k pounds or NZD?

If NZD you'll be very happy with that. If pounds then you'll be extrememly well off.

It depends what you're looking for but most of the points you've raised don't bother most people.

*Cost of living with regards to taxes and healthcare, insurance, etc still works out cheaper over there.
*MOT's are $45 each year (if the car is less than 5 years old) - that's around £20 so not THAT different to the UK.
*A lot of Brits moving over have UK cash to back them up so the low wages can be weighed up.
*Less businesses is obvious, the population of NZ is only 5mil but I would disagree that it is stupidly busy, way of life out there is a lot more placcid.

Other benefits that make it different to the UK

*The friendly people
*culture
*pleasant weather
*cheap cost of living
*wonderful housing
*clean & green environment
*well governed
*interesting wildlife
*Dramatic scenery like nowhere else on earth
*No car import tax, want that Nissan Skyline GTR for the £30k it actually costs rather than the £60k you'll end up paying in the UK?
*Skiing locally
*Houses are fantastic. £300k get's me a 2 bedroom flat in Kingston. In Auckland I get a 5/6 bedroom mansion with pool.

with the £ infront of 150k im going with pounds :)

Well, that's the UK wage :)

If they can get that in NZ (around $350k NZD a year) they'll be top 1% earners combined which is very good and their way of life will be amazing.

If they have to take a cut and end up on $200k a year that's still fantastic.

In short they'll be sorted!

I reckon looking at wages that I could earn in Auckland, me & the missus will get around $150kNZD possibly more. If I can start my own business the sky is the limit.. but it isn't all about the money.

Over there I can follow a dream, and that is to become a Diving instructor, and over here I couldn't afford to do it, but over there after a while, I reckon I can :)

So over here, 45 hours a week, knackered all the time with miserable weather and taxed to the hilt compared to nice weather, warm sea's and I can become a paid beach bum and dive occaisonally... hmmm not sure what I would go for to be honest :p

Friendly people lol most kiwii's I have met here have been the craziest little violent nutjobs ever, and they all have massive families (12 siblings plus) involved in crime from the four or five I know...

:p

That's a good wage for two people. Do you have any kids to support? Do you have a house to sell in the UK? How much cash can you bring over? etc. I've been looking at NZ and Aus for many months so I know all the typical questions to ask about means and needs

Diving would be good, you're never more than 20 miles from a beach more or less and as you can imagine the whole sailing and diving scene in NZ is massive. However, do expect there to be many diving instructors :)

You out there at the moment?

At work, we have several Kiwi's work for us and they are polite and nice people. But as in every country, there are the low lifes that tar the populus!
