If you want to get really pedantic, the emo scene was born and died in the 80s and very early 90s. None of the current emo bands are actually emo in the original sense.

If you ask me Emo / Goth are basically an incarnation of your typicaly dissafected bored melodramatic teenager that's existed since for ever.
You can't really seperate them as musical scenes any more, so essentially it's a style.
