Empire at War demo next wednesday!

I think the word "Meh" sums this demo up for me.

Graphics are dissapointing, even turned upto max - textures seem very fuzzy. But I'm more dissapointed with the space battles....there's no Z-axis movement, so its just like the land battles but with a space backdrop. Was I wrong in expecting something like Homeworld??

The 'cinematic view' camera sucks, it seemed to like staring at asteroids, and seems rather pointless unless your totally dominating the enemy force and are in a position to sit back and let the AI finish the job.

I do like the fleet management - where you can retreat back into orbit to save your troops, bring fleets from other planets to reinforce then land again. You can set up space defences around planets you control etc etc. That bit, I do like.

But the battles themselves...aren't right. "Tank Rush" for the win, and the fact that AT-ST's aren't much bigger than troops doesn't help.

So back to my orginal comment...it appears I wont be eating my hat, and I'd like to claim my five pounds!

I agree with you about the Homeworld bit. There aren't enough decent Homeworld clones. IG2 wasn't bad, but HW is really the daddy. Space RTS games should be 3D really.

Fast but borked !

Damnit, I thought the error was due to it getting corrupt when extracting as I've been overclocking my memory more than usual today!

Anyone tried a different gamershell mirror?

Gameplay seems ok. Not that complex to master quickly just standard RTS stuff. Feels a lot like Command & Conquer circa 1995. GFX are DX8 level really with a few DX9 FX thrown in for the explosions, heat haze & smoke. Some of the objects/landscapes lack polygons and look very blocky close up.

Plays smoothly for me @1920x1200 on a 6800GT so should work well on lower spec hardware @1024x768 & 1280x1024. Music is the John Williams tracks remixed slightly in places. SoundFX are sharp & well done.

Overall the whole thing seems like it is lacking a little something to be a really top scoring game. Big improvement on Battlefront2 however. No doubt it will sell very well because of the franchise & a sequel/mission pack is probably already underway.
