All that effort to recruit "genius" children commanders was made redundant. Without the super weapon none of it would have mattered.
That was my issue, there was no sense of magnitude, everything seems compressed and rushed. They covered all the bses but for a little effort and few extra screen minutes they could had added depth and gravitas, shame, it was close, but not there.

Not to mention, a child thinking he was playing a simulation, was willing to sacrifice everything to achieve the end result, an adult, would not have considered the sacrifice as 'acceptable'.
