Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Gas Oven, Gas Hob and a Combi Fed shower sits pretty on Agile.

Just can't fire up the gaming PC till after half 7.
We're electric oven, but gas hob and combi-fed shower too. I tend to run the PC in the peak time too :p

I'll be getting a split AC setup in two rooms early next year so that'll certainly add some daily costs on, but realistically I can always avoid the 4-7pm windows. Then, in a few years (either sticking a bit of extra on the remortgage or hopefully just have saved by then) get a solar+battery setup :D I'm expecting an install cost of about £12-14k for solar and battery?

It depends how big you want the solar/battery. There is a big thread on it in home and garden.

As for the AC, over cool your house before 4pm and turn it off. The house should keep the heat at bay for a couple of hours. I do the same with my heat pump but using the overnight rates to heat the house up when it’s cheap.

Edit using the AC in winter to heat can also save a bit on heating costs if used in the right way.

Slightly off topic - we've had rolling power cuts down here since Sunday. It started by only affecting even numbered houses (quids in as I am odd). It's now affecting all houses. It went this morning at 2am, and then again at 5am. I know because I misunderstood the Hue config for "if power comes back on, DO NOT SWITCH ON LIGHTS" so I ended up waking the whole house lol.

Anyway, is there *compoface* for this transgression? Currently tethered like a caveman. Only have 87% battery remaining. Send supplies

Powers on. Boomers do make me laugh - the WhatsApp group has gone wild with near-death idiots whinging there is no power. I thought they were the make do and mend lot, seem like a right bunch of pansies.

says the person with a home battery so not affected ;) :p

(or did you mean phone/laptop battery?

We have a house battery but i cheaped out and chose not to have it operate off grid.

We're still waiting for dlockers to join us in the solar club but he chooses to waste money on cars instead :(:confused:
I think I would have to swap the roof on the workshop from cement fibre to steel. The cash is tied up in the car and our scheme doesn't allow another EV so need a 0% loan or something to come through :(

Mines going up to 26.7p although my standing charge is ‘only’ 48.7p
Same here. (well 48.78p)..... East Anglia region is blessed with "cheap" infrastructure WRT electric.

my battery means i will dodge the worst of the unit price increase (albeit November - Feb it is unlikely to take me all the way to 11:30pm

According to the email, OCtopus believe we are close to big changing coming with standing charges with a lot of what is currently in the standing charge being pushed to unit price.

I can see the upside, it gives control to a degree to allow people to mitigate the costs............. but at the same time i can see it ending up that well off people will be able to mitigate a lot more than not so well off people.

The latter part is the section that people often miss.

I’m a huge user of electricity in reality, we are fully electric and have no gas. We also have an electric car (and no ICE cars). The house is heated by a heat pump, we have an electric oven and induction hob.

I think our annual consumption is going to be in the 8000kwh range but it’s heavily impacted by how many miles we do in the car each month. It will be interesting as it’s the first winter with the heat pump.

It’s mitigated with 10kw of solar panels and a 13kwh battery. In August Octopus paid us around £110 after standing charges. We use a lot of grid electricity still but it’s all cheap overnight rates at 7p so for every 1kwh I export in the day, I can buy 2 back overnight to charge the car, home battery, heat the hot water and house.

My bill over the course of the year will hopefully net out to between nothing and a couple of hundred pounds.

IMHO, the SC has over-reached what it was initially intended for with various things being tagged on. It needs a proper overhaul and, when it's done right, the SC should be equalised throughout the UK i.e. everyone pays the same.

Yep. If I choose to I can use much fewer grid units (I was on intelli flux for summer and my grid use was big), my yearly electricity bills for the last year were negative anyway, if they move more to the unit rate I will do well.
