Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Here is Gregs youtube abut the zonal pricing, hes been on this for some time but it seems to be gaining some traction.

Part of the reason I am not switching from Octopus is that they were a big factor behind some of the changes we have seen.
There is no way EON etc would be trying to be competitive on Ev tariffs without Octopus.

Its frankly absurd that the places in the UK where its generated often have higher SC where as the main places they don't generate anything noteable (London and SE) benefit from a standardised UK unit price.
Its literally the wrong way round.

Thing is Octopus were a disruptor but not any more, they are not really competitive unless you have specific hardware to get on IOG or IOF. Their standard flux tariff is now useless and their standard EV tariff is now poor compared to the competition. They need to up their game again.

Their is a huge amount of fleecing going on atm.
I've occasionally posted in here what I sell commercially with a medium size wind turbine.
Selling rates last year were back to where they were 10 years ago at 6.5p/ kwh. As from April, my contract for the next year, the best price I could get was 9.3p/kwh.
I fear that as the end customer has got used to these prices, atm their is a cartel going on.

Is starting to come down on the tracker consistently now, it's been consistently over for a long time though, be interesting to see if it was worth weathering the winter.

This deal is via Money Savings Expert website, £35 cashback on top, but I went through TopCashback, so possibly £42.50

I'm already with British Gas, Electricity was already fixed till 2026, and Gas was on PAYG.

There was a slight problem where if you are already with British Gas and you use MSE Energy Club to get the deal it wouldn't show up, but it was explained by an MSE Admin to change it as if you aren't with British Gas for it to show up and follow it through as explained here >> https://forums.moneysavingexpert.co...xed-tariff-v49-from-25-march-25-newsletter/p1

I received a welcome e-mail even though I'm with British Gas already, including a new account number A********. I currently had account numbers for each gas and electricity. Second e-mail to submit meter readings, which I did. I rang British Gas to speak to someone regarding Tariffs and I explained what I did, the British Gas Rep said she could see it on my account, and after 2 days - 29 March 25, everything should be sorted online. Just have to wait and see now, so far so good.

Update. On Sunday, I received a bill for my old British Gas account, the Gas was PAYG so no bill, but the Electricity I was charged an extra £50, as if I had switched supplier when going on the V49 dual fuel tariff via MSE.

I rang British Gas earlier today, and got directly through to retentions - a good thing! lol. I explained what happend, and they reversed the charge as it was a system error by switching to the dual fuel system, there's actually two different British Gas apps in Google Play Store btw.

I also said, I may as well just reverse the new tariff and switch to Octopus as they would give my £50 cashback + extra £25 by gift card nulifying the British Gas charge. The nice lady in retentions spoke to her manager, and I was offered an additional £100 to stay with my new V49 tariff which I've accepted. My bill was automatically changed.

So £50 fee error removed and +£100 credited to my account, plus £75 Amazon cashback in November for joining them, and my sister gave me hers as well lol. I'll also get £35 cashback from MSE. Very happy.

Great customer service so far with British Gas and actually since I initially joined in November.

I should have shopped around, but too tired, yesterday I switched from Scottish Power standard back to a fixed rate until end of May 2026.

Few quid cheaper than we were paying, but the new fixed having a 64p daily standing charge extracts the urine...

Standing charge rates really need limiting by the regulator.

They are limited

Other areas have it even worse.
My electric SC is 67.83p per day and gas is 29.86p, so 97.69p per day or £356.57 a year

the Gas SC is 1 area where i think there will be a big stick used to "encourage" people to move to heatpumps in the future.

as more and more people move away from Gas there will be fewer left to cover the maintenance of the infrastructure . i suspect some of this will be pushed onto the unit price but either way I reckon gas SC will go up significantly over the next decade.

i am regretting getting a new boiler 5 or so years ago. its too good to bin now as would be a waste but personally i would happily sack gas off and instead invest in a 2nd house battery and a subsidised heat pump.

There’s a point, projected at some point in 2035-2040 on current heat pump adoption rates where the SC reaches a tipping point and will start to sky rocket as people disconnect from the gas supply.

Yeah, I bought a new Ideal boiler in 2023, but I don't think my property would suit a heat pump due to the age.

when you weigh up the cost of switching, it's not worth it. Which is why hardly anyone is.

Same with solar panels. It's funny when you see them recommended on EPC certificates. "Spent 5 figures and save a couple of £100 a year!" Err nope.

Average time in the UK at least to recoup costs for paying for solar panels is 10-15 years, so it's a little more than "a couple of £100 a year".

But even at 10-15 years, I'd ask if you're going to save, say 500£/year (average time/average cost), why wouldn't you?
