Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Hmm, just checked and only 70mm insulation in the loft! Not really considered it worth increasing before, but definitely need to look at it seriously now (although i guess probably not going to see much benefit until it starts to cool down again at the end of the year)

FTFY!

It's quite concerning what's going to happen come October. While we can absorb the ~120% increase coming next month, a similar increase in October is going to go from "well there goes this year's holiday" to "well there goes this year's dinner".

All our bulbs are LED, we have a 2 year old A rated boiler, double-glazing throughout. Not sure what else we can do to reduce our usage at the moment other than sit in the dark with the heating off... OK maybe not quite so bad as that, but still...

Considering emptying the loft and putting an extra 200mm of insulation down - should maybe save us £15-20/month? But need to figure out how to raise the floor so we can use the storage space still :/
Problem is the energy companies have got wise to people turning their heating off so they've whacked the standing charge up as well. There's no escape.

It will also help keep your house cooler in summer, particularly if you have a dark coloured roof. My loft can easily get to 35c+ On a regular summers day, not even those really hot ones and if you don’t have insulation, that heat will get down into the house.

generally not alway the case, the standing charge was a way to offset the cost of the energy, it was a ploy for yrs that folk would go for the headline figure and ignore the SC. you can see it now with standing charges hitting nearly 50p a day to keep the kwh per hr charge down, that way they are guarenteed income

Probably means the people over the street will be using their wood burner even more than they have been, joys of particulate pollution and the whole place smelling of smoke if we leave a window open a crack for ventilation. And won't even think about hanging the laundry outside in a dry day if the wind is coming in our direction.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures I'm afraid.

I think I'll be getting another 20T of logs from the forestry commission to use in the biomass boiler. It's way cheaper than burning oil but I admit not so good for the environment. Thankfully I don't have any close-by neighbours to complain. If it's been seasoned long enough and dry enough it burns clean with little to no smoke.

I'm also going to buy a load of foil covered phenolic foam pipe insulation for all the heating pipes in the garage. It's that crap grey foam pipe insulation at the moment and I'm sure I'm getting quite a bit of loss from it.

Time to fire up the chainsaw this summer and chop up the ash tree storm Arwen brought down. I have dried out logs in storage already so this tree will be for 2024 onwards. By then hopefully another ash tree will have fallen over.

Two can play that game - If you're lucky enough to still be on the older fixed rates, submit high meter readings before it ends. That way you'll "bank" some gas and elec at the old rates.

Loads of people on here, even Martin Lewis suggested loading up your old non-smart pre pay if you can.

That said, you can’t take the mick as they do send out physical meter readers fairly regularly. I’ve had 2 visits in the last few months, I’ve spotted them on the CCTV.

I should have added a wink. They'll do well to get through my locked gate!

Very good advice, and advantage of pre pay, kind of did same myself by giving inflated reading to suck up my account credit on pre April prices.

Except your wrong as the standing charge had gone up due to increased costs plus some of the increase is to pay for failed suppliers who didnt hedge properly or mismanaged their business. SC increase has next to nothing to do with energy suppliers "getting wise"

That's good, luckily it won't affect me for a while, I locked in to a deal last year before things exploded.
Which company do you work for?

Drop in the ocean.

Add on 1000 kWh of gas at 7ppkwh for the new rate that's £70, say you've been paying 5ppkwh prior to the price rise so that's £50. £20 saved, not sure I can be bothered tbh.

I'm doing our loft at the minute taking out 70mm of fiber insulation and putting in 140mm of PIR where I can reach there is above the bay window where you just can't access.

You can't do it on prepay meters that use a stupid top up key
Your prepayment card or key will update to your new prices automatically when you top up after 1 April. It's really important that you top up with an E.ON Next card or key, as if you use another one your prices won't update and you could end up owing us money.

my standing charge is going from 30.8 > 53.8p
unit from 19.87 > 26.859

Eon reckon my bill will go up from 467 a year to 676
200 of that will be standing charges...

still waiting to find out what happens to my heating but it's not gas, I think they use wood pellets or something so maybe it won't go insane

One of the big boys :D Openly admit we **** up and get stuff wrong and arent the most efficient but a lot of the time we dont deserve half the **** we get from people so sometimes I feel the need to set the records straight :D

Not that im dying on a cross with this comment but i did also kinda screw my employer by advising loads of guys on here to fix on a deal (which makes a loss for the business due to current pricing) before it was pulled later that day :D Cost the business some money but got about a dozen guys on here locked on a better rate than is available now.

I'm like a double agent working both sides as best as I can :cool::D
