Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

OK, the last fifty or so posts have been nothing to do with the energy rates, there’s no way VAT on smoothies is anything like being even close to on topic.

Let’s get back to the subject please.

I fixed mine with EON for 2 years just before the Ukraine crisis kicked in. I have always been in credit with EON but anticipate that will probably change going forward. I get that VAT is a relatively small amount on the bill but I wish they had scrapped this temporarily but then again they will claw it back from something else.

This. Compared with other wealthy european countries we are a country of low tax. I often point this out to people who share the meme about how little UK pensioners get compared with German pensioners and point out that if we all pay up to 10% more tax per year like the Germans then we too could have a much more generous pension but nobody wants to pay more tax now surprisingly.

Lets be clear, by the time all is said and done, a UK national on an average wage is paying c. 40% of their entire income in direct and indirect taxes. No matter how you view it, this is substantial and translates to wages and pensions on the state side of the equation that make up c. 60% of total state spending (a significant portion of which are then also subject to the same taxes!).

You may think it’s significant but in reality we raise less through taxation than most other European countries. Across OECD countries, the U.K. is below average, for a ‘advanced western country’ we are categorically low tax overall.

The key question isn’t always about the headline rates, what sits below that is key. What is taxable, what reliefs are there and who is actually taxable.

Home heating oil just hit 81p a litre, so £435 for 500ltrs. It's gone up £35 in 24 hours. If it stays this high the minimum order of 500ltrs need's to come down to 250ltrs.

It's going to be a very cold this winter for many, extra jumpers are cheap. : (

Worth signing up for? Just had my "Important: Your Energy Prices Are Increasing" email from them. Tell me something I don't know.

Just logged into my Octopus account and realised they havent sent me a bill since September! £434 in credit.

Very odd as on a smart meter so they should be getting my readings all the time.

My energy fixed price ends on 31st May and I've just been looking around today. We currently pay around £165/month but the best price I can get is £310/month. That's an increase of £1740/year, practically doubling our current cost.

It's not ridiculous, it's criminal.

Yeah, we are heavy users, 2 teenage kids (So tv's/consoles/computers on etc), too many rooms, effectively was OK on £1650 for Gas/Elec last year, had a DD of £170 and was nicely in credit until the prices rose.. I came out of our deal literally the weekend it all kicked off with nothing to switch to..

I've just been informed my new DD is £293 pm.. which seems wrong, as they are basing that on last months usage (when we used a lot of gas for heating) which will obviously drop as the weather warms up.. sounds like they just want to get more money in the bank..

I'm almost glad we did go EV though, our fuel bill for the 1200 miles pm @ 35mpg would be circa £225, however checking the electricity bill, we spent £21 for off peak for the month

Found out I can chargey car for 13p/kwh at work compared to 17p at home. Unfortunately rhe charger does not like my car:mad:. My work must get fantastic rates as they only renewed them last month. Keep pushing for a decent charger, but I reckon I've used 300kwh in the last month charger, but that's a very cold winter so I got creative when estimating my yearly usage bearing in mind I've only had an ev since december).

It goes beyond failing to get rid of vat.

The government are ultimately exacerbating the energy crisis with Rishi's moronic 1.25% increase in NI. This is a time of crisis where we should be reducing tax and shrinking government drastically not increasing it!

That 1.25% is being earmarked specifically for the NHS and care sectors though, it's not an overall increase in Government budget (in theory).

Of course it’s going to increase the governments budget, they have another £6billion or whatever it’s meant to raise to spend and not borrow.

I’d be more interested where @Energize thinks the state is too big given it’s basically been cut down to the bone at this point and there is literally nothing left to sell other than the railways which no one wants to buy.

Seems about right...prices going up 50% then going up same again in Oct for new price cap..next winter will be expensive

There's going to be some sweating go on if things continue the way they are going.

Price per therm for Gas closed yesterday at 289, it then opened this morning at 321 which was getting close to decembers all time high of 335.. it then spiked to 453 per therm earlier and has now settled at 400 per therm

Whoosh. Someone asked how you evade tax with crypto, I wasn't talking about my activity.

I asked you how you were doing it.

50%ish is the prediction but it could be a lot better or a lot worse depending how things go between now and August when the cap is set for 1 October.

Useful to know.
At this rate there will be quite the hike in October. :(
