Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

I’m with OVO. They suggested I increase my DD a couple of months ago to match the increase in prices, which seemed plausible given the price rises. Last month they sent another email suggesting I increase it further again as come the end of the 12 months by their reckoning, I’ll be £500+ in debt …. My balance is currently £750+ in credit.

Then today, because I hadn’t done as they suggested … they went and increased it anyway … I don’t bloomin think so. Changing it back.

Had an email saying the rebate is on the way to bank account, might take a few days, still waiting.
I wonder if they're doing it in batches, still they haven't communicated at all. Would have preferred if they'd just credited my account TBH.

These energy companies are taking the pee. My DD (not that they're collecting it) is set at £145, can't reduce below about £135, current balance £0, last month's usage £67.

If you're financial secure; I'd suggest requesting to switch to variable DD. Only took an email to Eon:Next for them to do this. I'm still £210 in credit plus the incoming government subsidies. I'll see whether they take from that and then supplement with variable DD as necessary in the coming months.

Saved £45 for the month turning off all the plugs overnight and being religious with turning all the lights off when needed, the kids just don't bother so it's been hard work this month but worth it

You saved our entire electricity bill turning off plugs?
:o

Yes. Got it last week

Blummin’ gits. I’ll have to try to get in touch with them. They bury their contact details on the website.

Interestingly the stupid bot says of the £400 that it will be paid to customers who pay by DD. So you’re out of luck if you don’t?

Every household with a mains electricity supply gets the £400.

Payment MethodHow will I receive the payment
Monthly Direct Debit We’ll send you your discount as a refund to your bank account following your Direct Debit collection. This may take up to five working days to appear in your bank account. If your Direct Debit value is less than the monthly discount, we’ll refund the value of your Direct Debit to your bank account and provide the remainder of the discount for that month as a credit to your energy account.*

If we’re unable to collect your Direct Debit payment, we’ll apply the full discount to your energy account, so you won’t miss out.*

Please note that if your Direct Debit payment is normally at the end of the month, you may receive your discount at the start of the following month.
All other payment methods (excl. Prepayment)We’ll automatically apply the discount to your energy account in the first week of each month.
Smart PrepaymentWe’ll automatically apply the discount to your smart meter in the first week of each month.
Traditional PrepaymentWe’ll send you vouchers by email or post which you should receive in the first two weeks of each month. Simply take your voucher to your nearest PayPoint outlet to have the value added to your payment device.

My guess is "the lights" he's turning off are a couple of 100w grow lights

£45 is ~130kWh, that's 2 weeks usage for us, or a constant 180w consumption over the month!

Oh yeah it's Pounds.
Used 227 in September which was 48 pounds (excluding the standing charge)

Which is all great, except they've done none of that for me. I pay by Direct Debit, they haven't taken my payment, they haven't credited my account and we're at the end of week two of the month.

I answered your question. As you haven't received the £66 you'll have to take it up with Scottish Power.

My account (Shell Energy) doesn't show the £66 nor the Direct Debit payment they took on 3 October. They've appeared a couple of times and then disappeared again. I'm sure there are a lot of teething troubles so I'll leave it a while and hopefully it'll be rectified.

There are 7 of us in the house and my usual electric usage is around 200 a month, with four PC's going on in the house and kids leaving lights on all the time, with the oven usage and items on stand by.

Now you may understand why

Do I assume I am a rareity in not paying by direct debit, but instead awaiting a bill and posting a cheque? I like having full control of how much Scottish Power can take, if they can take it, and when they can take it. All these confusions cited here about DD payment amounts and refunds reassures me none DD payments offer a lot more control over my money.

You use cheques. Explains a lot.

If you pay by DD you can cancel it so not pay it either that way. Say you had a large bill sent which is wrong, if you cannot get it resolved cancel DD, or request a DD chargeback.
When you setup a DD you normally have control on when its taken, though not variably. They have to give notice of it coming out etc.

You pay more for not paying by DD for precisely the reasons you mention. The admin of having to chase and process people like you was significant.
