Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

I'd love to see a quote from anyone at the start of this conflict that said Ukraine would swat Russia?

Not saying there wasnt some but my recollection seems to be the overwhelming thoughts were Russia was going to steamroller Ukraine, and the ensuing ineptness displayed by the Russian military was a surprise to the world.

There's barely any posts in just this forum's Russian invasion thread alone that hasn't poked fun at Russia's capabilities and actions, whilst at the same time hollering in here about their living costs going out of control ;) I can't be bothered to look for it now, but I posted with words to the effect that there are more than one way to skin a cat, and Russia will use all means at her disposal to lay siege to those supporting Ukraine. I even mocked those that said cutting off the oil wasn't "fair", by saying it's not a game of cricket being enacted.

April is going to be doubly worse, it'll be the first month without the extra winter support and then potentially the end of the cap. For people who struggle to budget more than a month or so ahead, they're going to be screwed.

I guess it's not all bad, considering the tax cuts coming in April though :)

...oh, wait...

well, at least people haven't had to worry about their mortgage payments going through the roof during all of this!

...er...hrm... uh... yeah, well, good luck guys!

Personally I think you have been repeatedly misreading the room in this regard in what people are saying.
You came up with the oil thing but at that time I thought you were off, and not representing what people were actually saying but what you wanted them to be saying in order to make your "point"

The cost of living i think most people get it and really what most people are most annoyed with isnt the direct russian impact, but the indirect negative impact our own government are causing. Such as policies to ban solar farms, allowing nimbys to prevent onshore, allow fracking without reforming the market that means UK produced energy doesn't benefit the nation, not running a campaign to get over to people the best approach is to reduce consumption etc etc.

Most people mocking of Russia's capabilities has been as they have been making out they were a top notch military force, with lots of high tech weaponry the West should fear. When in reality they were getting beaten mainly by their own weaponry used in a more effective way.

Yeah. Isn't it great how we're all paying the price for Tory infighting since Cameron quit? "**** the people, if I do this I bet I can erode support for the PM and take their place!" We're doing the Roman Caesars proud.

Russia were supposed to be a former superpower but still very much in that league but the number of mistakes made, causing the death of their own people and the deaths of others makes them look like a drunk waving a gun around, a threat for all the wrong reasons. They've made themselves look weak and Russia probably should be worried about future challenges from the precedent they've set which is nothing to do with the west, its a large country with many enemies on every front potentially.

It was never a good idea to rely on that source of energy, it was never correct that UK cannot support itself in the extremes. Its a shame blood has to be spilled before mistakes can be recognised, it was already true decades ago UK has to balance its trade especially energy

The Ukraine war has caused the price of gas to rise.
It really wasnt the Ukraine as that isnt new they shot down an entire civilian airplane and thats not enough of a signal theres a threat for us to notice. Uk imports are too high, we can produce energy and its part of uk security that we remain able to do so. Even though UK is far better then most of europe we still can do far better then grabbing onto a crutch with both hands and complaining it was only a mistake when it was taken away, it was always a mistake to allow this weakness.

I'm not misreading anything, across Europe, and in particular the UK forums that I am more familiar with, are literally full of mocking cartoons, ridicule and contempt for Russias performance, yet they scream blue murder that as a direct result of closure of Russian gas supplies in retribution for our support of Ukraine, their living costs are going through the roof.

What can't be blamed on Russia can certainly be blamed on our over population, rampant consumerism and reliance on outside labour and resources to far too great an extent. For example, fruit pickers, slaughter house workers et cetera, get the prison population to work, and the illegal immigration centres, put their inmates to work. Zero cost beyond Draconian security and enforced compliance. Keeps them fit, tired and compliant, aids the UK economy to some good extent. Deters further illegal migration into the UK and deters people who currently see the UK penal system as soft and not to be feared.

Well I suspect it depends on where you are looking.
But you really need to split the Russian military performance away from the other stuff.

Nice segway into a bit of immigration nonsense as well.

Kinda, you was suggesting 3 months.
Fair enough, I still think it was pretty obvious it was coming though :(

Glad I stayed on Go/Tracker, even though they are a little more expensive than the capped rates.

Actually, overall, Go works out slightly cheaper with the night rate, and the gas tracker prices have been well below the cap all month :)

Winter 2023/4 is going to really suck though :(

73% higher than the current gov. cap, or 73% higher than they were originally predicted? Or just the original 73% which was predicted (on top of the January and October increases)?
Likely factoring in what the costs were predicted to be by April (so with Oct 22, Jan 23, and Apr 23 rises), compared to price cap up to Oct '22.

Indeed, still rubbish. My only thought is at least 12 months out there may be some global changes where although we don't see a further reduction in the cap but the general cap not needing to be limited by the Gov by then sort of thing.

So what's being planned/constructed in the UK right now to alleviate the gas supply issues?
Nothing because everything takes longer than that, at least if you mean over next 12-24 months. But there are factors globally that could be starkly different by this time next year that could change things.
