Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

* Corporation tax change gone as announced Friday
* Health and social care levy gone
* Dividend tax rate gone
* New VAT free shopping scheme gone
* Basic rate staying at 20p, not even going down in 2024 to raise around £32bn/year
* IR35 change gone
* Energy price guarantee only running until April now.
* Stamp duty cut being retained

Don't see how Truss stays now. Hunt is in charge.

Truss:"Our energy price cap guarantee would have helped families...."
Everyone; *throws egg*
Truss: "Guys its my only live, give me a break"

LOL... so we're now basically heading down the Sunak approach with a figure head PM...

Still no windfall tax on the oil firms (well it should be all firms really), that would have been the sensible thing to do.

Edit.... nope some of it looks even worse than what he was doing/suggesting....

The energy cap is about the only thing that would hold them in office. If they get rid of this then they're throwing most of the country under the bus.
I hope the government keep their promise to cap prices until 2024. If not, a lot of people in this country are going to be so negatively affected that it hardly bears thinking about. :(

Confirmed they're scrapping it in April next year.

She's dead in the water. PMQ this week is going to be funny, she will have zero response, Starmer is going to have a field day. Can't wait to hear what Ian Blackford says.

At this point in time, I don't care who replaces the PM now. But whatever they do, they need to retain that price cap.

I think the best you can hope for is another £400 next winter, can't see them trying the cap again.
They need to move electric price away from the gas price.

I'd imagine they would step in again, maybe October 2023 after assessing what the current energy costs at that point in time are. So people would be on their own over the summer months when traditionally energy use is less.

The Sky news panel are making the point that the government had pledged to fund the energy cost difference without knowing what the energy costs will actually be over the next 24 months.

Yes but that’s not all what he said. They are going to work out a new plan for April to tackle the costs that doesn’t expose the public finances to unlimited liability and also ensure that people that need it will get help.

In principle i dont think revisiting the energy situation every 6 months or so is necessarily a bad thing, rather than a promise for 2 years.

who knows where the land will lie in April next year................ That is not to say IF nothing has changed then it should be scrapped with no help offered.... just that in theory this 6 months emergency help put in place now, would give a competent government (no comment ;) ) some breathing room to actually come up with a more detailed better thought out scheme.

They can't do that.
It helps people like me. With cheap fixes who don't need help.
It would be a huge waste of money.

Yes it will be targeted by the looks of it. Sensible but most people could be looking at thousands of pounds extra in their costs.

She'll be ripped to pieces at PMQ's, if she bothers turning up.
I'm thinking there's around 99% chance she finds an excuse for this week. The 4 questions at her press conference was so obviously an attempt to look like she'd take some whilst doing the bare minimum and running away at the earliest chance (without looking like she's running away). She's spent weeks saying how amazing her energy plan was and longer than Labour's.

Yeah if bills are 5k a year over winter they will do something. Will create much anxiety for people announcing it like this.

I expect they will also break the gas price driver for the pricing like other countries have.

Just easier to administer, since their so crap at everything else!

I think they will do something targeted. Not sure what. Like you say anything complex is hard to administer. Things like council tax bands etc aren't appropriate.
