Looking at it now it seems Bamford is a massive missed opportunity. I am also surprised we didn't try and get Vardy out of retirement.
Vardy sniffed out the BS at the world cup when he was used for bench warming duties even when Kane was clearly off his game by the knockout stages. I think it would need a new manager and approach to persuade him to return to the England team. It's a shame as he's probably peaked now and he could really have torn up some of those teams at the last Euros and WC if Roy and Gareth had had the guts to try. Roy in particular had the opportunity to take the spine of the title winning Leicester team in Vardy, Drinkwater, Albrighton and Simpson but he, like Gareth, is too defensive orientated to have the bottle. Which is odd as Leicester's strategy was the counter attack and incisive pass from deep for Vardy to exploit which you'd think would fit better. Honestly Sterling and Vardy at pace running and stretching defences with Lingard, Alli and Rashford marauding and overlapping could have been more effective (back then when they were all in form) but no no, it was all about letting Kane have room to sit in his pocket and giving Dier the chance to live up to his name.

They said last night that Maguire could miss the majority of the group stage, surely he needs replacing if that’s the same prognosis a week before the tournament starts. That’s bonkers.

Also Phillips is still struggling with his shoulder, is he really going to be fit? Not sure it’s a risk worth taking having these players struggling with coming back from an injury. It’s unfortunate for them.

How many decent centre backs do England have? Not too many, especially those playing for big clubs, regularly against top quality opposition in Europe. That is, I suspect, why Maguire is there, fitness doubts or not.

I quite agree. Don't take crocks. It hasn't worked in the past. Wilshere, Rooney, etc they've just been dead weight at tournaments when they're not on form, and removing a genuine alternative from the bench

On the flipside it kind of worked out in 2002 with Beckham's metatarsal.

The thing about taking crocks, in a squad of 26, you should be able to accommodate one or two injury doubts. However, the problem here is don't have many options at CB, if it was a wide forward or something injured it would be easier to just soak up. So there's definitely an argument for swapping him out, would you really want to go into a crunch deciding group game (or knockout game) and roll out Maguire if he's not been fit to play or train properly for ages, bit of a gamble.

Maybe Southgate would take the view that there's no point swapping him out, he can just play the CBs in his squad and be confident that if he suffers a couple of injuries and/or suspensions at CB, Maguire will be fit by that point.

maybe Gareth just doesn't want to miss out on the inflatable unicorns and he knows Maguire's the one who took them all home last time.

A couple of injury doubts in a squad of 26 is one thing, but having at least 4 (Maguire, Henderson, TAA, Phillips) plus others who must be playing on fumes at this point (Rashford for one) appears to be a huge risk. Seems absolutely nuts to be taking players that likely won't be available at all during the group stages - Surely in tournament football consistency and getting into a good groove quickly is everything.

Then again I'm not a football professional and the coaches and team doctors know a lot more than me!

No that's basically what everyone seems to say - teams grow and develop over a tournament. The weeks before are key. Henderson makes sense if he's almost back (and looks sharp in training), the other three, drop. Put in Ings, Bamford, Lingard, and make do with the existing pot of CBs. Was it White who saved off the line? He didn't seem too bad tbh. If you rush someone out who's not 100% they will know it and won't commit in the same way as they'll feel vulnerable and want to avoid a flair up of the injury.

If we need someone at the back of a diamond should Henderson not go and we want someone else to cover Grealish (who isn't Eric Dier) then any of Rice, Choudray, Milner, Cook, Noble, even Winks would seem like potential alternatives. Ok you might not think of them as first pick but there are options, it's not like there's no-one else. Or am I missing the point?

It was stupid taking 4 right backs, and tbh, Trent looked pretty poor last night. He’s not 100% anyway. Lingard will be a handy option. He did very well in the last World Cup. Hopefully he can reproduce that in the euros.

No one last night played well. He just mis controlled the ball a few times. Him being injured is a massive blow for England.

I don’t think it is. He’s wasn’t totally fit anyway imo. If he had made it through last night, I wouldn’t have been surprised if something had gone wrong in training or at the euros.

Big misses for England include Kane, Mount, Henderson, and Grealish, those kind of players, not an unfit TAA when we already have 3 right backs.
