England V India ***Clash of the Heavyweights*** Test, T20 and ODI Series

Not sure about today. Brilliant first session, but I just cannot understand the defensive field setting that started after lunch and continued after tea. Prior and broad took singles with far too much ease. If we'd got one of them, by Fielding aaggressively, then we could have wrapped them up for under 1
200. Good batting by the two bossmen though, meaning that we can fight for a draw tomorrow!

Well that's what I'm getting at, I'm not sure you can say they deserve to be number one based on a specific 11 playing, and when they fail it's OK because Zaheer or whoever was missing and they're really still number one. You need to perform over time to be number one and the excuse of our best player being missing doesn't cut it in that respect. To be number one you need to be able to do without a player or two in my view.

Coming back to this point, no Zaheer, Sehwag, Gambhir injured, Tendulkar can't bat till later, it's fairly likely that Dhoni will be missing the Trent Bridge test.

Of course, you should be able to cover for losing a key player, but when you could be losing up to 4 or 5 of your key players, who were the ones to get you to the number 1 position, then it's simply not going to be the same. I'm not making an excuse, it's just very unlucky for India :(

India played like England used to. Getting in a good spot but then failing to capitalise and ultimately letting the game slip away.

Nope. India play well, then play awfully, then let themselves back into the match only to fail again.

Other examples of this that spring to mind:

South Africa V India 3rd Test
India V England ODI world cup
India V South Africa ODI world cup

It's too sad to happen regularly :(

I think they declared early. I would have been batting for another 50 to get a 500 lead then be anle to hit them aggressively end of play sundaay and the start today.

Can see India catching us if we aren't careful

I think 450-odd is a bit of an ask though on a last-day pitch - hopefully there'll be something in it for Swann today. Of course if it were England chasing they probably would have been 4 or 5 wickets down already, and then Monty would've batted through to the end on the 5th day :p

I think that's the point, that's exactly what England used to do. Brisbane being the ultimate example, find some inspiration, play themselves into a good position and let it slip.

That said, the other team is allowed to play well. India didn't end up chasing 450 entirely through their own fault, that was an exceptional innings from Prior.

To be honest, anybody who wins this match today will have deserved it. India have a heap of batting but to get 450 in the last innings would be an excellent performance. Likewise, England have an entire day for 9 wickets but the pitch isn't bad, they're bowling has been good rather than superb in this test and India have heaps of batting, it'd be an excellent performance to win.

An illustration of the other frustrating thing about Broad...he's really not a bad batsmen when he puts his mind to it. His 169 wasn't completely fluke, he should be averaging more than 27 certainly...

I was saying this to a mate the other day.
When the chips are down, and Broad's bagged some wickets for confidence, his Batting is really good and useful to the team.

When he's low on confidence with the ball, or Eng already have a stupidly high total, he cant bat for Toffee.

Also seems like he's always gone for a duck first ball Yorker -> LBW/bowled , or gets a decent total.

Why aren't Channel 5 showing the bowling speeds on the screen in their highlights show at 7? It's really annoying me as I like seeing what type of ball was bowled as well as obviously how fast each bowler is bowling. Maybe the Indians broke it by being too slow :p.

Sharma though; is he bowling at 80mph or 90? Looks quite quick.

Probably because their "coverage" is crap.
