England vrs Turkey and other (Spoiler Thread)

Bridge had a shocking first half, giving the ball away many times. 2nd half he really showed his class coming forward though and helped make up for the genuine width from Gerrard on the left. Gerrard was pretty anonymous first half, always looking to come inside and drop back to get the ball. Which might have been ok if he didn't keep trying to play Hollywood passes for Owen, sometimes you just want England to keep possesion and get it into feet, especially with no big men up front :)

Beckham was getting stuck in early doors, I had a vague vision of him getting sent off because he was so upset at the suggestion that England lacked passion and would overcompensate. Seemed to be some stuff kicking off at the end, Beckham goading the turks a lot when he knew the game was safe. I'm sure he will regret that come October in Istanbul :o

First half wasn't great, but Rooney did spark things off a bit and got the crowd involved. England were a different team 2nd half, with penetrating runs and balls to feet. Vassell looked lively after coming on and got a goal, fair play to him (I was sure Ferdinand was gonna score though!). David James seemed determined to give us all a heart attack but did make a truly world class save however.

Hopefully this means Heskey will be kicked out at last, with Owen, Vassell, Jeffers, Rooney and Beattie as the targetman we shouldn't need him anymore. Anyways a decent peformance, Bridge was sloppy first half and Ferdinand was sometimes guilty of trying to play his way out of defence too much, but 2nd half was excellent overall.

At least this has showed how overrated Turkey (good side, but not #3 in world) are, I've been saying to a German for the past 9 months that Germany didn't meet a quality side in the WC until they lost to Brazil. I also claimed we would beat them for sure at home, so at least I haven't been made to look a fool.

Did anyone see what happened to gerrard right at the final whistle? He had a little bit of blood on the left of his nose, it all got a bit handbags!

didnt see that at all ??

hmm setting things up ominously for istanbul

I seriously am worried about that game more so for the fans than the actual players though mind you. we do not want another repaet of the atrocities of a couple of years ago.

First of all Acid-Burn = Manchester United supporter

Just got back from the pub and ive got to say I have lost my voice. I loved the game and from my point of view, England were on top most of the game. (might of been the beer influencing me)

Rooney: what can I say, this man(boy) is a legend. Exactly what england need at this time. If Sven plays heskeys once more while rooney is avaliable, then he needs his eyes and ears testing. Loved the game, loved the goals. COME ON ENGLAND

Lets hope we can keep it up and play even better next game.

One more thing. When Sven gets given the blank team sheet to pick, it should have Rooney already printed in the number 9 position. He did himself and England pround tonight. He got a standing ovation from the pub, not just the stadium. Lets hope this is the start of a good few years to come. oh and Cem agree with you totally mate :D

Apologies for any spelling mistakes, ive been drinking for England :D :D

I think the last 10 mins of the first half turned the match in england's favour. I think england took turkey by suprise and turkey just couldnt get back into it. I thought Nihat played well but the other guy didnt when, sas and suker came on their attacking looked miles better in the 2nd half.

good win for england but still loads of hard work to do, but ur in a good position now. I think turkey will beat england in instanbul. Turkey showed for long periods they were a good side but they completely lost it in the 2nd half. I think both teams are pretty much even, i would like to see both play each other on a neutral ground, now that would be a good match

ROONEY!!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE. A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN THE INGLAND TEAM!!!

His bulldog like attributes are what makes me a big fan of his. He really knows how to put himself about and is only 17!

Strength of Shearer, pace of Owen, skills of Gazza = Quality England Player! = ROONEY!!!!!

And this isnt just jumping on the bandwagon. Everytime i've seen him i've been more and more impressed!

AWESOME save by James aswell!! As good as a goal that!

p.s who's that left sided midfielder who plays for celtic (can't remember his name)... i think sven should give him a go hes got a good cross on him!

Steve Guppy ??? No chance, I don't think there is enough in his game to warrant a call-up.

No one does player rating better than u do cem ;)

He is an amazing talent, he was very quiet in the first 35mins but then he sparked into life and the whole team sparked into life. That is what i find amazing. Its like at arsenal when vieira performs arsenal perform, what i saw tonight was rooney perform and england performed

Amazing a kid so young and with such little experience can play like someone who has been around for so long like kev said.

I wonder if everton will swap him for jeffers :p they can have a couple more players and some cash as well if they like as well :D

guppy isnt celtics first choice left midfielder though im sure theres somone else they pick ahead of him.

Alan Thompson.

I agree actually, he's got the best left-footed cross from an Englishman for quite some time.

I'll stick me neck out here and say I still want rid of Sven, I disaree with the team selection today and I'm expecting an Owen-Heskey pairing for the next game. That Beckham will be missing might save us from the usual stale performance but I doubt it and only until the next game.

Gotta say that I agree with you. Can't see Sven walking away from the post and I certainly can't see him being sacked between now and the next match, but I can't see him being at the helm is going to get England playing the way we know they can.

For a start his team selection is all wrong, and secondly the dirty Turks were working harder than us tonight! And thats all wrong for an England side playing at home.

I think the only reason we won tonight as because they were playing for a draw right from the start. It just about handed us the match. if they'd come and played (and had Hasan Sas from the start, like they will have in the Ali Scummy Yen) from the word go I think they'd have done us.

If Heskey does start the next game, the shouts for Sven's head will only get louder. Though the team names tonight (barring Neville and James) were right, the positioning certainly wasn't. Gerrard on the left? Give over.

Personally I think Scholes should be dropped if Butt is going to play and Butt should play behind Beckham, Gerrard and Dyer, with all three pushing on.

Yeah its Steve Guppy, I think he played for England at Non league level when he was at wycombe and then at England B when at leicester, he was in contention for a place a couple of seasons back but now hes moved to Celtic i don't think he could break into the side.

Last night was really good stuff.

Owen should have scored but he just lashed at it
Rooney/Vassell should have scrored if Emre hadn't have hand-balled it, difficult for the ref to spot tho.
Vassell - took his goal well that 4 in 11 appearances i think (Rooney+Vassell for future?????)
Nicely placed Penalty from Becks, I think it was a penalty as the Turkish guy leaned on Dyer, helping him to the ground

Rooney had a blinder, this lad is set for great things (MOM award too), i see a lot of alan shearer in him. He also gives as good as he gets, it was quite funny to see him pushing the Turks, when there was that Scuffle.
I hope he has set the mould for future players in that as far as England is concerned we don't have to ease all good young players in gradually, the odd one CAN handle it and then some.
Beckham - what is wrong with him lately
Gerard - Suberb last 20-25 minutes
Scholes/Butt - Did a job but that was it
Rio - why do i always get nervous when he treis to beat 3 attackers bringing the ball out of defence
Bridge - Great 2nd Half, although not as attacking as Cole.

I think this was about the most emotional i've seen Sven.

I'm fairly sure it's Alan Thompson, as Steve Guppy doesn't usually get in the Celtic side any more. As I said above :)
