england young team for world cup playoffs

Lallana, Rodriguez and Cork will (thankfully) be key parts to saints first team next season so should get to prove their ability and general worthiness for the world cup qualies.

unfortunately, and no offence meant to the saints fans, i think its due to them being at a small club (relative to premiership experience) that they will get the games.

the bigger teams generally have to much resting on games to be able to give debuts/run outs/extended runs in the teams to young players.

the loan system helps, but only if they get the involvement/games (wilshire when he went to bolton etc).

hopefully if the players can get developed (the likes of Lallana etc) they won't be snagged by the bigger teams to be left to rot in the reserves.

Not sure why Johnson isn't being included, one of the better players at the euros.

johnson wasn't included for a couple of reasons

1) hes been getting regular first team football for a few season, mostly as a starter.

2) because of age, currently 27, going into the world cup i would expect him to be one of the experienced members of the team, if he continues to do well enough to be selected, and the position has richards/walker to keep him on his toes.

Smalling shouldnt be anywhere near an England starting 11 D:
He's just a versatile squad player..

Are you sure you're not thinking of Jones?

Oh yeah forgot you had that retarded hate for him through out the euros and said super brave scotty lad carryed

I'm going to assume I know what that was supposed to say.

Parker did carry him, Gerrard didn't do anything like enough and he's past it. Time to move over.

Weird, odd that Gerrard got 3 assists and currently has the most tackles at the euros.

Top lad Scotty definately must've carried, the way he threw his body at the ball a few times and nailed a few shots wide or over was pretty sensational.

Do you have any stats as to how much ground gerrard covered?

He constantly looked like he was running in water. His markers were just passing him by.

Oh, and is gerrard top in all clubs at the euros? Sounds a bit sus to me.

Does a heavy first touch and and second touch being a tackle count as a tackle?

@OptaJoe

Following

18 - Steven Gerrard has made more tackles than any other player at Euro 2012. Battling.

Must've been moving rightly to make all those tackles. Never mind getting into good positions to get assists, to claim he wasn't doing enough moving/effort only have to see his first assist was it to see the effort he put it in to keep the ball from going out.

Continue with your blinkered hate for whatever reason it may be? Were you the DJ he floored or something?

You didn't answer either of the main questions :/

You're the one who seems to think Gerrard is bad for some reason I've given you stats along with actual majority opinion that he was good and one of you're best players at the euros, if you want the other stats I'm pretty sure Google is as easily available to you as me.

Also how much ground you covered doesn't necessarily mean a lot if your positioning is ******, probably need to run less if your positoning is good and still make plenty of tackles.

Yeah that's one of my frustrations about the England team, if you are not contracted to a "top 6" club then your international career will suffer massively. Looking at some of the kids who have been playing a lot for the u21's team most of them weren't taken along "to do a Walcott" because they aren't at a bigger team yet, which is just a little sad :(

It will be interesting to see how Lallana does this coming season because he certainly seems like a player that England should be using: good at dribbling, creative passing and can score goals. Cork is a very good midfielder but not quite International standard (although I'd love to be proven wrong). Rodriguez has a lot of potential so I could see him becoming an England player within a few years.

Theres also a good few youngsters at the youth academy who play with skill and vision rather than the normal England standard. Hopefully with the new updates being implemented at the youth academy we can produce even more promising players.

I'm excited to see all 3 take a really good bash at the prem as I don't see us buying anyone else for those sort of positions giving them the best go at the prem. I think all 3 really do have a chance to push for an England place if they work as hard as they did last season (and Lallana doesn't get another silly foot injury).

The academy gave contracts to 3 or 4 kids this years (Ward-Prowse, Jake Stevens and that little winger kid that came on in the FA cup off the top of my head). All three looked pretty good on the ball but its a bit early to call them for internationals.

The academy updates look like they will be quality, it's supposed to be one of the best in Europe when finished.

hopefully matt la tiss is still an influence at the club and can encourage them to stick around whether or not they do well this season.

the youngsters need to understand its better to get regular 1st team football than slopping about in the reserves getting paid silly money.

but i think a lot of them are more driven by seeing the money and things the likes of rooney etc have than the football :(.

not sure if it would work, but i would be more than happy if a wage cap on youngsters based around age/first team appearances was put into place.

Hopefully now that we are in the Prem our youth players will stay on and progress rather than look for the big wages.

Our finances before the takeover were so tight that any promising players had to be sold just to survive. We managed to get a good price for Ox but his decision to leave was not influenced by our need to sell, more the chance for him to play with better players.

Our new Academy is meant to be a rival to the kind of setups at Barcelona and Ajax. Obviously this would take years to implement but the vision of our Executive Chairman Cortese coupled with the backing of the Liebherr family is encouraging. Such a shame that Markus didn't get to see us reach the Prem.

Im sure. I think Jones will become a much beter player than Smalling, I dont doubt that every squad needs a versatile player like Smalling he just wouldn't be in my starting XI he would be in the squad because he can cover 2 positions though.

.

I can see your point - but its also worth considering that those who dont get regular Club European games, may well get so out classed by coming up against even an average 1st team internationally, it puts their developement back fundamentally

Swings and roundabouts though I agree, it could be just as possible for a youngster to be invigourated / inspired by being thrashed in an England team vs Italy (from a performance point of view)

Jones can arguably cover 3 positions , so is even more versatile - but Im sure a lot of United fans would currently prefer Smalling in either position they both cover, as he is much better in either defensive roles (although he is a much better centre half than he currently is at RB).

Can easily see Smalling as a primary choice centre half for Utd in a year or two (once Rio's back and other assorted injuries forces him into a less demanding role), Jones is stil several years ontop of that estimation away from that (although Im sure SAF is hoping they partner each other in defence for many years)

Smalling is far and away better than jones at the moment. He's a much more accomplished and mature player.

I don't think that will ever be true of jones. He doesn't even really have a position yet.

I wish they would chop the lot and start over. For me;

Hart

Walker
Smelling
Jones
Baines

Wilshire
Cleverly
AOC

Johnson
Carroll
Sturridge

Only "older" players I would let near are Lescott and Cahill. The current crop are not good enough so we should do a Germany ala 2000 and wipe the slate clean and get a new generation playing the right way.
