Englands World Cup Failure

Rubbish defence. Terry needs a speedy partner and someone with a little higher predigree. There is a reason why Upson is a highbury cast off.

I would love Cappello to ask Pearce to compile a list of youngesters and then remove all the oldies. Lets start afresh and introduce some real pace throughout the team. I would be tempted to promote a new captain and start cutting like he is George Osborne. Get the lads thinking like a team as in the case of Spain. May take some time and not be pretty but theres plenty of talent floating about a al sturridge etc

The Germans out thought and played as better unit, same old stroy as far as England is concerned. Outwitted!

The Premier League also does not care less about the national team, Germany realised this and changed the structure to promote German players.

Rubbish, Italy have mostly players playing in Italy, yet were even worse than us. France has players all over all the leagues, and were worse than us, but still with players in ALL the main leagues, they won the Euro/World cup double.

Brazil used to dominate decades ago when the majority of their team played in their home leagues, now they dominate with the massive majority of their players playing as minoritys in other leagues.

You can as a FACT say looking at whose won the world cup and euro cup, that how many foreigners play in the home nations league doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. Anyone who disputes that is just daft, go through who has won and hasn't. You 100% can't say only teams who play in leagues with mostly their own countrymen have won the world cup, because its not even close to true.

I just think this so called golden generation haven't been managed properly, put in a proper formations etc.

Too much hype around Gerrard and Lampard.

No real DM.

No balance on the left.

No real creative midfielder.

No real modern fast passing direct counter attacking flair.

We failed because...

Crapello out-smarted himself... I'm sure he had a brilliant plan... but it was a complex one too and the real problem was the players were kept in the dark until the last minute when they were saddled up with a ton of information and went out onto the pitch trying to take it all onboard and work out their role in the bigger picture - end result being however good a player they were as an individual they were ineffective because they weren't sure what they were supposed to be doing. The more experienced players gave up and just got down to playing the rules they knew and the less experienced players felt like they were letting everyone down because they didn't know what they were doing, became dispirited and made basic mistakes - even tripping over their own feet.

This was compounded by crapello's apparent stubbornness to adapt to a changing situation - by 20 minutes into the England V Germany game it was apparent the formation needed changing up a bit to combat the German one but he carried on with what he'd decided to go with regardless.

We need a player like that Ozil, he looks great, is he 21 too?

We have a bunch of them, but the wrong setup, idea's tactics and team around them. THe system doesn't matter, the fact that they could run from midfield to support their front man, while our midfield(and supposed DM) ignored them, made it easy.

THe most simple thing is, other teams say they'll pick on form, and they do, England say they'll pick form players, then pick the majority of the most popular players no matter how badly they are playing, and then whoever incorrectly normally, is seen by the public as having a great season. The French team did exactly that, Ribery, Malouda, Govou, Sagna, are the favoured players and were picked despite how useless they've been this year. Then Gallas/Henry who were great with their clubs were horrible with France, largely because they knew how crap the team was and voiced(along with the whole team) their problems with the manager MONTHS before the cup, there wasn't a chance in hell of either player well in a team they knew was doomed to fail with a manager they literally hated, yet the manager still picked them.

Actually I don't agree with that bit, I think Capello tried something as you said tactically that a team that plays together for years, like Real, needed time and days and games to adjust to, that just doesn't happen for international sides, KISS, keep it simple stupid, is the way to go for internationals.

But I don't agree with changing formations, there was nothing we could do against Germany, the single biggest weakness in the first 20 mins against the Germans, was lack of anyone decent enough to cover the runs from midfield and track Oezil or Muller who were both fantastic, Muller was absolutely superb, he ran rings around one of the best left backs in the world, who was out of position trying to help the left wing because Gerrard point blank refuses to play the left wing role.

We don't have a DM, there was no one capable in the entire squad to come on and man mark Oezil or Muller and if we did, they'd have played through Podolski anyway. Our right back is a joke our left back was nullified by playing a non existant left winger, our centre backs were pulled all over the place covering for those two never being there and they were covering late runs behind the defence because Barry didn't track any of them even once.

We needed Parker on from the start to make those runs, and a competant DEFENDER at right back who can DEFEND and then put a actual winger on the right wing whose good enough that he doesn't need the right back to do all his work for him.

We lost when the team was announced, not due to stubborness to adopt a new formation in a game deep into the world cup. As with what you can't do with international teams, you also can't practice 48 different lineups and systems to deal with every eventuality on the pitch, you practice one setup with the best BALANCED team you can create even if its without some of the so called best players in the team, and you play ONE formation for 2 years before a cup and you make sure your team is the best they can be in their best formation with their best balanced team and then you have your best chance. We did none of that, we didn't have a consistant team, there was no balance, the team/positions changed every game, the friendlies were wasted, the goalkeepers had no idea who would be playing, the formation changed by the game, its a joke.

Not enough brains in the team and we seem to move a lot slower than the opposition, as though we are running in treacle. :D I don't want to sound like Alan Hansen but our defending was truly shocking, no shape to it whatsoever. :o

Agree with DM that we needed a natural DMF, and I really rate Parker, sort of player that gets no credit in the Prem but is a really really good player, and would (I imagine) relish the chance of playing for England. Barry just isn't a DMF and isn't good enough when he plays there.

I agree KISS is very important at this level. Changing formation is never a good idea as it just adds another layer of complexity - but by that point it was all or nothing in for a penny in for a pound as they say.

I agree with what your saying about team composition strengths and weaknesses but I believe that could have been worked around if capello just let them play football instead of trying to throw "clever" tactics into it.

Well said, I don't know what this obsession is with atttacking wing backs? It's ok to go on the odd overlap but at the end of the day the defence is there to keep a clean sheet.

Because we lost Ferdinand, would have affected the team a lot just before the start, and Gerrard the new captain.

Poor team choice, not taking Darren Bent, and Rooney lost his form. I think thats about it.
