English League & F.A. Cup Football [19th - 24th Mar 2010] **spoilers**

Quite staggering fact that despite not having Rio and Vidic available for the majority of the season as well as the constant injuries to Brown, Evans, O'Shea, Neville & Rafael; basically hardly ever being able to name a settled defence for a consistent run of games we've actually got the joint best defence in the league this season

Only 3 goals off being the joint best going forward as well

Arsenal fans crying about the red card?

T'was a last man tackle, red card.

Fab has grown face furr? Didn't know he'd started shaving.

Wednesday didn't lose :D

If it was anyone but Sol i might agree with you, he would have needed a taxi to get there in time.

I dont think that matters. The ref was back on the halfway line and it looks as though Verm actually got the ball. He might have done it awkwardly but he was focused purely on the ball.

For him to be sent off it would have had to be a goal scoring opportunity and the striker didnt even have control of the ball.

So he should have got a yellow at worse and even that i think is unfair. He wouldnt have got a yellow card if it happened anywhere else on the pitch, certainly not a red.

I dont think we are crying over it. This is a football forum and we talk about incidents in the game. That was a talking point which we are allowed to give our own opinions. Mine is that it shouldnt have been red, yours is that he should see red. No need to go trolling.

However...if we lost the game because of it then you might have seen some tears from Arsenal fans :p

He wasn't sent off for a bad tackle, he was sent off for bringing the striker down preventing a goal scoring opportunity.

Foot on the other boot, Arsenal fans wouldn't be saying this if it was West Ham bringing down Bender.

Its not a goal scoring opportunity if the striker isnt in control of the ball. Plus Verm got the ball, does matter if the striker goes down if he got the ball.

Actually if it was reversed I would say we got the penalty and we will gladly take it but it wasnt deserved. :p

Not sure why you are moaning about Bendtner when he has nothing to do with the situation? Just makes it sound like you are trolling more to get a reaction.

You're off your plonk!

He got the red as he was "the last defender in the way" which is rubbish as sol was in line. I would agree it was a pen as verm didnt make a good job of it. Even though the "3rd official" and the "ref" was a country mile away they pretty much made a hash of it.

That might very well be Arsenal's season over unless they can get the red card rescinded. Wouldn't want Silvestre and Campbell at the back for very long.

Agreed, a lot of nonsense being spoken lately about Arsenal being genuine title contenders, yet not only is their points:games ratio worse than a couple of sides, they also aren't doing enough about their goal difference. They really need to be beating sides down the bottom by 3s and 4s not 1s and 2s if they want to get into contention. Couple that with the fact that Vermaelen is now suspended at a time when Gallas, Senderos and Djourou are all unavailable as well and you have to worry for them.

Not convinced by that red card myself, the guy went down in a heap from minimal contact, it looked to me like a gentle nudge in the back at worst, you see 100x worse than that from every corner in every game across europe.

Arsenal's problem isn't their goals scored it's that they let too many in. They're not playing many high scoring teams in the run in so it may even out a little by the end of the season but I think they've already let too many in to hope to win it on GD. Hopefully if they are still about at the end of the season it won't be that close or it would be a horrible way to lose the title

Luckily Song can slip into CB quite comfortably as he showed today. Maybe it's an option to keep Diaby and Denilson/Nasri deep and Cesc a bit ahead of them and couple Song with Sol/Silvestre to limit the damage

How are we not genuine contenders exactly? 7 games left and there are only a few pts difference between the top three.

Whats goal difference got to do with it? When was the last time someone won the premier league on goal difference? Oh yeah never!

And if it did come down to goal difference and Arsenal lost it by that alone then they would have been genuine contenders for the title

My point was they need to be beating the 'lesser' teams by more than 2 goals, whether that's 3-0 or 10-7. You wouldn't expect them to get more than +1 (at best) against the likes of Spurs and Man City and they are currently 6 goals behind MU.

Now admittedly Arsenal have an 'easier' run-in than their so-called rivals and with them playing each other one or both are guarenteed to drop points. The concern is that in order to capitalise on that you want to be in a situation where you are ahead on goals. Last day of the season is:

Arsenal vs Fulham
Chelsea vs Wigan
Man Utd vs Stoke

So basically you'd say that with a fullhouse cheering them on all three sides could be capable of rattling in a few in the secondhalf if points are level, but you need to at least get within touching distance.

That's the point I'm making though - it's NOT 7 games left for Chelsea, it's 9 :)

Premier league has never been won on goal difference but it has gone down to the final game before and thus potentially goal difference could have decided the title (depending on results). Then don't forget we won the league on goals scored not so long ago (effectively meaning that goal difference did come in to it - had our goal difference been worse, we'd have lost).

2 reasons we've blown 4th:

1) Carlos Cuéllar
2) Emile Heskey.

Cuellar is dreadful going forward but bombs down the right wing then doesn't know what to do with it, loses it and can't get back in time EVER. His crosses are pathetically poor and he's unsteady at right-back anyway. He was at fault for the second goal.. going to ground needlessly then sitting there watching the Wolves player waltz past him? Not good enough.

Heskey is just useless. I hope for the sanity of the nation he isn't taken to South Africa. Yes, he can usually hold the ball up well, but his balance, technique and general play are so poor. He's just not Premiership standard any more.

Congrats Spurs on 4th place. I hate 'Arry "back-hander" Redknapp but Spurs are an impressive team to watch and deserve 4th this year.

You still can not deny that Arsenal are title contenders though. Whether they win it or not they are still contenders.

Who won the league on goals scored recently?

Given the vermaelen sending off and subsequent penalty I think keeping a clean sheet was an excellent achievement and scoring 2 is acceptable so today was a decent result. On paper, 2 - 1 vs. a 10 man Hull is again a rubbish result but watching the game you'd say it was a good result due to how resilient Hull were.

It's nice to think that Arsenal could smash these teams 4 - 0 every week but they're fighting for their existence in the league which is just as much motivation as Arsenal have to win the league (in their different expectations). The games aren't as straight forward in reality and I'll take a win at any score right now

Looking forward to the big game tomorrow, hopefully Vidic fancies 90 minutes against 'pool this time though...

Gudjonsen's goal was pretty good, still looks a rather handy player.
