English League Football ** spoilers ** [16th - 19th October 2010]

I dont think the squad is THAT bad. Its easily a top ten squad.

DM is talking like unless you have Mascherano you'll be relegated... yeah.

It is Rafa's fault, its not Rafa's fault that Mascherano left, but its certainly not Hodgesons fault he left, it IS Rafa's fault that he pushed Alonso out the door and left the joke that is Lucas as the only "defensive" midfielder.

Even more amazing considering Lucas isnt a defensive midfielder. I suggest you check out his recent performances for Brazil (2 MOTM performances at that) playing a 'normal' playmaker CM role.

What good has or even could have come out of sacking Benitez?

I do actually think that Benitez going was the right thing, both for Benitez himself and for the club. There comes a time imo, when things are just right for a change, it doesnt necessarily have to be a negative statement of the managers ability its just sometimes a fresh look is needed. (I actually think that Arsenal/Wenger have been at this point for a couple of years now, even though I think Wenger is a good manager, likewise I think they need a fresh view)

I just dont think Hodgson was the right fresh view and I said as much at the time.

With little to no money available to spend he didn't have a whole lot of choice in replacing Mascherano.

Really? i thought he had about £20million worth of choice in replacing Mascherano.
No one made him get the worst footballer in the entire planet, and Meireles who whilst being good, isn't what liverpool needed.

I said last season was a massive dissapointment and in normal circumstances Benitez's job should have been under threat but given the position we found ourself in, sacking Benitez was the worst possible outcome.

Benitez was sacked on the back of 1 bad season and even that was overstated by the fact that we had over achieved in the past few seasons.

What good could have come out of sacking Benitez? Fresh air into the club, new ways, tactics, signings. It hasn't, but that's the theory.

I disagree that Benitez was sacked off the back of last season, I think he was sacked based on the atmosphere around the entire club. The squad was going downhill, and there appeared to be absolutely no way of building it back up to the level it should have been at. Had we finished in 7th because we'd bought a whole load of wonderkids who weren't quite capable at the time, but in a season or two would put us in the top 4, I'd have welcomed him to stay with open arms. This wasn't the case. The squad was heading downhill, and Benitez appeared to have no means to get it back to where it could be, particularly considering his poor record in the transfer market for players at the cheaper end of it. The only way to turn things around was for him to go.

And whilst were at it, Lets look at the AMAZING contribution to our squad Roy has made shall we?
Meireles is the one good signing, but we lost Masch for him, and we needed a good DM. RM is not a DM, hes a traditional CM player, or a "75%" of Gerrard type player.
Poulsen - All the fans said it was squad strengthening, i said he was Masch's replacement. Nice to know i was right. And he sucks, major sucks.
PK - Terrible at defending, as was Insua. But this guy is average / terrible going forward to. Considering everyone slated Insua for 'having no pace' its amazing how many times he beat his man on the outside. Not to mention his attacking-positional sense was 100% better. Crossing is light-years better. Ball control is better, dribbling is better .. shall i go on?
Joe Cole - He's not as good as the media wants everyone to believe, but he never sucks as bad as he has for Roy.

Again, I haven't said that Hodgson has done well. As you say, he has not done well at all. But this is irrelevant as to whether or not Rafa should have gone.

There is no way Benitez should have been sacked while the ownership situation was unresolved. He was the best man available to hold things together until the sale of the club went through.

If you then think it's time for a chance, ok, but not before then.

Maxi was a hilariously bad buy, utterly useless today, yet to see him put in more than one good 5 minute spell since he joined.
He was a free transfer.

Athletico hadn't been starting Maxi for a couple years as he was well passed it, Rafa thought he was a bargain.
He was a free transfer.

The club, Rafa/someone thought Cole was a bargain, he wasn't, at all.
He was a free transfer.

Its not a settled team nor one he has been able to change dramatically in the summer.
He's changed the reserve keeper, he's changed the first choice left back, he's changed the centre back pairing and he's brought in Poulsen and Merieles to play ahead of the defence. He's drastically changed our defence!

With little to no money available to spend he didn't have a whole lot of choice in replacing Mascherano.
He's spent around £20 million!

Your knowledge of your own team is laughable but your knowledge of other teams is an absolute joke!

Man City playing Blackpool...hopefully Blackpool can get a result against City...looks like De Jong is back...hopefully he wont break anyones leg this time;):p

Who were you going to bring in to bring these new tactics etc etc etc?

No manager of any note was going to come near us and the only realistic options were Dalglish (and the board would have never allowed that) or somebody like Hodgson. We've got Hodgson and look where we are now.

I agree that it wasnt the ideal time but at that stage it looked like the ownership situation could drag on for years yet, hell its only in the last few days that we've know for certain that it wasnt going to.

As far as I'm concerned, if you do a bad job you go. We shouldn't be a club who says "well, you've done badly but nobody else will come to Anfield, so stick around".

The board new full well that the ownership situation wasn't going to go on for years, the money was due to be repaid 2 days ago ;)

I said myself that from going from 2nd to 7th (even if 2nd was an over achievement) was unacceptable and in normal circumstances a change of management would have had to be considered but no good could have come from sacking Rafa.

Oh and whilst we are at it, Aqualani picked up a goal and an assist today for Juve and got MOTM. My mate tells me he was rock solid in the middle, barely put a pass wrong.
Meanwhile .. back in Liverpool...

:o :o :o
Stick around or wait until you can make an appointment that would be an improvement?

Torres isn't playing well, should we sell him and replace him with Carlton Cole? After all it doesn't matter if we can't replace him, he's playing poorly he should go.

He's a good player. If you can be bothered, feel free to go back through my post history, I'm sure I would have said that at some pointn on here:)

However, be that as it may, can you honestly say that he was not a waste of £20mil? Bringing him in injured when the side was crying out for a creative midfielder who could come in and make an impact immediately? For me, spending that much money when the club is skint on somebody with as bad an injury record as Aquilani was a gamble which was too large, and proved to be a waste of money.

We didnt know that it wasnt going to drag on, even you yourself said it had the potential to drag on just 10 days ago. We simply didnt know if there would be court case after court case dragging out for 18 months or whether H&G would get back in or what would happen until just a few days ago. Potentially the ownership situation could have gone on for an unspecified time and might even possibly have ended in us having H&G still in charge. Like I say, it wasnt the ideal time but equally with the future being so up in the air, holding on for an indefinite period of time wasnt ideal either. Add to that that Rafa has ended up at the treble winners I'd say it was the right time for him too.
