English League Football ** spoilers ** [30th October - 2nd November 2010]

I think being that Gomes handled the ball afterwards it was deemed to be in Spurs' possession. So the ref played on and didn't bother blowing and awarding a free kick. Nani happened to get up and take advantage.

Yes he handled the ball, but the ref gave nothing. No complaints on Nani tbh he played to the whistle as the saying goes.

Well watching MOTD flag was only up after goal. Ref was shrugging to Gomes and Nani whilst Gomes was fuffing around with the ball.

When Nani asked, the referee said playon looking bemused about what Gomes was doing.

No whistle, hands behind his back, advantage given, goal goes in, Gomes then run towards linesman and he sticks the flag up.

Simples.

This is not naive - it's blatant cheating

Would U be happy if this was MCFC

Though not

Okay be completely honest, Nani thought it was a penalty so grabbed the ball, he didn't grab the ball to get up and kick it in the net, he didn't grab the ball to throw it in the net, he didn't grab the ball to throw it to another Utd player, he thought it was a penalty.

Kaboul, DELIBERATELY pulled his arm(admittedly that would have been UBER soft for a pen) but then again DELIBERATELY pulled his shirt and tried to get him away from the ball.

Kaboul cheated, blatantly with every single intention of stopping Nani scoring in an illegal mannor.

You simply can't deny his intentions or what he did, its right there on video.

Kaboul is infinately more "guilty" than Nani of cheating, by a mile.

However the fact Spurs got away with a penalty doesn't change the fact the they weren't unlucky straight afterwards, ultimately bad decision or not, its the same as everyone assuming someone will be called for offside the keeper stopping playing and the goal standing(Di Canio vs the Clown springs to mind), play to the whistle it would never have happened.

This is what I'm unclear of, if an advantage is given, clearly the advantage wasn't there so then you blow for a freekick, usually.

But thats complicated by, well, Gomez just ran away from the ball, at what point has the advantage gone and you should get the freekick awarded, and at what point is it your own damned fault, I'll admit I have no idea what the rule actually says.

I mean if its an advantage given and Gomez accidentally throws it in his own net, the original freekick is awarded, or his own stupidity is punished, I don't know.

I think the advantage rule needs a clear ability for a player, if they choose, to not accept the advantage and be able to ask for the freekick straight away.

Anyway, the fact that if he was playing an advantage, I'd probably expect the freekick to be given when Spurs lost the ball(if it was that soon) makes me think he didn't play the advantage.

EDIT:_ brain fart, I just noticed you said hands behind his back, thats ref's making clear its not a foul, advantage given the ref will put two hands up straight out from him to indicate play on, like he did when Nani asked him wtf was going on.

All moot and doesn't matter one bit now. Even Sunday pub team knows that you should always play to the whistle. Gomez assumed it was a free kick. He assumed wrong.
