If you look at the players who have been scoring in the world cup.

None of them play for a premiership side.

The only 2 that have done well is Donovan (who isnt even a premiership player he was just on loan) and Tevez who Manchester Utd didnt think was worth £30 million.

Van Persie who is the Netherlands lone striker has only scored 1 goal.

Torres and Rooney both scored none even the they played up front in all games.

Players from the spanish league seem to be doing best.

Villa, Fabiano, Forlan, Higuain.

The premiership needs better strikers.

The same Forlan who couldn't really buy a goal in the EPL?

World Cups can be awful for judging players, I remember when we signed Oleg Solenko when he scored 5 at the world cup. Needless to say he was shocking.

I would take Torres and Rooney over any of those others any day of the week other than Villa I would also take Van Persie as well.

I've never thought or said that the Premiership was the "best league in the world".

I think Spain have a very good footballing league, along with Italy, Germany and to a lessr extent France.

England has never been "the best league in the world" it's just people who believe the Sky hype.

Also depends how you define best as well, the EPL is the most competitive.

I prefer the bigger games in Spain. When the better teams in the EPL meet you typically get a stalemate for huge periods of the games.

On the other hand you could say the Premierleague is so tough that all the players are burned out by the world cup. I don't think the fact that prem players havent been scoring proves anything.

You can't judge a player by a month's knockout tournament, I don't understand why managers seem to think this. You need his league form instead if by and large, you want to use him in league games. Even when Arsenal bought Gilberto we'd apparently been tracking him for a while as he played in Brazil.

I bet that doesn't stop teams. I reckon there'll be a Japanese player or two moving on as will a good few S Americans.

the guys get adequate rest. is not as if they play football 24/7.

they get at least 3 days off per week and on the days they do train its only for a couple of hours not a full 10 hour shift.

do the players in other countries not train as hard or play as many games?

weakest excuse ever is saying that players get tired, or are tired from playing an extra match during the week. that fat comedian ran 10 marathons in 10 days or something, now he has the right to say he is tired on the 11th day.

Even world cup winners are not guaranteed to be even decent players, hello Kleberson and Guivarc'h :o

Its all so subjective. I think most top leagues in Europe are very close to each other in quality. Spain probably is the best at the moment given the number of star players there.

However judging based on a world cup doesnt really prove anything. Even Diouf looked good at a world cup.

Does Germany beating England make the German league better or does Fulham beating Hamburg make the prem better? Does Ronaldo being crap mean la liga is bad? Rooney and Torres both look to be carrying injuries.

Oh and add Kuyt to your list of prem players doing well.

The premier league is certainly one of the most physical. It requires greater athleticism and fitness than other leagues for sure.

Technical ability is not up there with Spain, but looking at the UEFA co-efficients (and therefore recent performances in Europe) then it's clear to see that our teams are extremely competitive when it comes to European competitions.

The Premier League is without a doubt the richest league in the world - the income that the bottom half of the premier league receive far exceeds that of the bottom half of La Liga or Serie A.

as people have mentioned, you should never judge a player based on a 4 week knockout tournement or by his national team mates.

one way to look at it would be to see which country's teams have performed the strongest in Europe over a certain period of time.

I would say the variety of the top 6 teams in each league year on year counts for a lot. It's always more different in the EPL than it is with other European leagues.

That isnt actually the case though. The stats for the last five seasons in England, Germany, Italy, Spain:

No of teams finished in top 6

Eng - 10 different teams, Ger - 10, Ita - 11, Spa - 12

No of clubs winning title

Eng - 2, Ger - 3, Ita - 2, Spa - 2

Given theres not a great deal in it but the EPL certainly doesnt come out on top in those terms.

If we take only the number of different teams to finish in the top four over the same period:

Eng - 5, Ger 8, Ita 6, Spa 7

The fact that spurs are the only club to have cracked the top four in the last five years shows exactly how uncompetitive the business end of the EPL is. Obviously this is all subjective and your taste in football will determin which league suits you best but IMO Sky can stick their claims of best league in the world. Team for team from top to bottom Id put England third behind Spain and Germany. The Bundesliga is now more profitable than the EPL as well and generally the clubs have remained on a sound financial footing.

All media hype never the best league

the only reason english teams have done well in europe is because of foreign imports and massive budgets other countrys have caught up now and can out spend english clubs spain being the most obvious

result no european trophys in two years

Every league has their top teams and the not so good teams, just the way it is.

Throughout the big leagues in Europe, the top teams from each are on a relatively even playing field, it's just the teams below them which are of differing quality.

It's the most intense and high paced, but about third or fourth in terms of technique, but that's purely because there's so many English players playing here

Then teach the English players more technique? :D
Pretty sure the youngsters must be getting better coaching by now and with the emphasis on more flair and skills.. If not then why?
