English League Weekend Football 16-18th January *spoilers*

Not sure whats so surprising about that, he neither plays as a striker, nor has really played much since then due to injury, during his last uninterupted spell in the team he was the leagues top scorer, since January or so he's been on and off injured with fairly few games being played.

Either way, I still can't believe Petrov starts, he's almost as useless as SWP but both get a couple flukey goals now and then. He's been down the right wing maybe, 5-6 times already and every single time stops and comes in on his left, theres few players in the entire league so completely one footed that they won't even consider a cross on the other foot. Considering Bellamy has played very well on the right and is right footed, and Robinho plays well on the right the insistance on playing Petrov on the right seems a tad strange.

Defenders who can't read what he's going to do should be embarassed.

You don't find it surprising? Hmm.

And cutting left footers in from the right is very effective, they wouldn't play him there if they didn't expect him to cut in. They are probably wanting him to cut in near the box, and have a shot.

Playing quite well at the minute. Donovan looks like he would fit right it if we managed to sign him.

His corners are excellent.

Played very well last week considering he had only been at Everton for 5 days. Could prove to be a quality decision by Moyes.

Indeed, shame he has to go back in March. Hopefully he would consider something over the summer if we offer anything for him.

Sigh, I picked it beforehand.
Craig Bellamy, all five foot nothing of him, for some unknown reason in the middle of the wall, letting them go over the top. I know you don't want your best headers in the wall but it seems crazy to me not to have the bigger men who are in the wall towards the middle, to stop them going over it.

As for Stoke, surely the management of the club must have questions to answer over the David James affair?
1) Did their greed prevent the signing of David James? Would he have have tamely patted down that freekick to the opposition?
2) What was the effect on Sorensen of their flirting with the Pompey keeper? Is it the sort of thing that would boost his confidence, or perhaps give the indication that "We're not sure about you"?

If the officials are going to be consistent in the Everton game then there will be another couple of hundred penalties in this match before it finishes.

Apparently there are doubts over Sorenson's fitness, he has pulled out of training and pre match warmups a few times this season. David James is on silly wages, incredibly silly wages, Stoke did right in not breaking their wage budget to accommodate a 39yr old keeper who flaps as well as the next keeper.

I don't find it surprising that a guy whose barely played, and doesn't play as a striker, hasn't scored since before the last time he was played consistantly no.

As for Petrov, I didn't say cutting in wasn't an effective tactic, if I did please highlight where. However I've never seen a player who ONLY cuts in EVERY SINGLE TIME WITHOUT FAIL be effective. Because if the defender knows exactly what you are going to do 98% of his job is already done, its when a player varies what he does and becomes unpredictable he becomes hard to defend against. Petrov hasn't gone on the outside a single time this game, or last game, or this season, he simply doesn't use his right foot.

He also has so far cut in about 40-45yards from the goal every time, he doesn't get to the goaline then cut in and cross or get to the edge of the box and shoot, he cuts in early, very early and has offered zero threat all game.

Barry has been abysmal first half, he doesn't have the passing ability or quick thinking mind to play the ball around the likes of Fellani when he's being pressed hard. Ireland would be doing an infinately better job as he does was Cesc does so well, anticipates, turns away from danger and he knows what his next move is before a pass even reaches him, doesn't dwell on the ball not knowing what to do. Robinho/Tevez have gotten zero service as Zabaleta/Petrov/Barry's distribution has mostly been out to the right or not made it anywhere.

How bad the City defence looks when Zabaleta is all over the place against a decent offence.

So for all the pundits and people saying how great Mancini was, exactly the same team as Hughes had, an inexperience team as a unit not quite together when under serious pressure, as every new side is.

Barry and Petrov off, for really anyone and they'd improve dramatically. Shame Irelands not on the bench, leaves them Benjani for Petrov and have Robinho/Bellamy on the wings, and well they don't have any options to replace Barry with.

...which I why I never understood their pursuit of him in the first place. They already have backup in Simonsen, I could have maybe understood courting a younger stopper, but not someone like David James who is old and on the big bucks. With the story getting out I just don't think it's done them any favours with respect to Sorensen.
