Entitlement what can we do about it.

They aren't starting out low compared to their peers. They're starting out in the same relative position. The problem is that that position hasn't changed.
And it's absolutely the previous generations faults. The issue is, they're not going to get paid more than experienced workers which is what many are expecting.

It's not entitlement though is it?

To live a life of relative luxury under the care of your parents for it then to dawn on you as you enter the workforce that mathematically, unless something changes, you are going to be screwed relative to previous generations is reasonable cause for concern.

The way things are, most kids today are likely to have much less disposable income over their life then previous generations. It's a fact.

It is entitlement. They are assuming that they deserve more.
Why?

This is a very traditional way to look at the workplace. Having experienced that in engineering and then something completely different moving over to tech you would be amazed what breaking those glass ceilings do to people. Many with that traditional mindset would be very shocked to find people younger than them earning more.

Absolutely, I love to see graduates overtake the crusty old people who are coasting until retirement.

Its not about age. It's experience and demonstration of ability.

When people say experience they mean years in the job. Ability however is something different. Having someone with a couple of years experience with a higher ability than someone with 10 years should mean they get paid more. However in most industries in the UK it doesn’t work like that.

But graduates have demonstrated neither.

So the youngest people in society deserve less than than those before, through no fault of their own ? It is entitlement to wish for change?

The really entitled people are the super rich, but they don't come on PC forums to whine about normal people. So, in the collection of "normal folk", the real entitled people (and whose attitudes we could maybe change) are those in the middle classes ~50 to 70+.

They could though. If you knew you could have a few percent pay rise if you worked hard and demonstrated your ability or you could get a huge pay rise and even a promotion in a short time then who do you think is going to be the most motivated? If we put everyone on a conveyor and tell them they can’t progress past someone else because of experience then they aren’t going to work as hard as someone that has no such restrictions.

Nothing is stopping that. This is starting pay. You're arguing something completely different.

I don't think you know what the word entitlement means. I suggest you go and look it up then come back.

All keep in mind that - London salaries are massively skewing those figures. They're paying high wages because very few people want to work there anymore. The additional costs involved with working in London are simply not worth it, without a 6 figure salary.

No. I think it's you who doesn't know the meaning, and this is such a pathetic response.

Lol. That post was literally the equivalent of I know you are but what am I?

Go look it up then come back and reformat your points.

The 2 graduates I have in my team both earn over £100k.

Starting pay needs to be good enough to attract exceptional talent. If they aren’t good enough then they will be let go. Someone that sits there relying on their experience to keep their job will also be let go. No ivory towers.

How do you know their talent is exceptional when they're unproven and inexperienced?

Contextually, entitlment here means "the belief that one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment".

Expecting the same quality of life, the same level of income, job security etc. for greater productivity isn't special treatment. It's just not wanting things to regress.

Interview them based on technical ability and cultural fit. Then after hiring they are reviewed at various stages, usually every 8-12 weeks for a year.

A good salary is a privilege. We do not have a basic right to pay of any level above minimum wage.
