Essential Android Apps

The one thing, which I can never decide on (for good!) when it comes to android, is browsers!!! There are so many good ones and each has their strengths/weaknesses that it becomes so hard to choose then.

Holoweb got a nice update yesterday and it is superb, performance and smoothness is much better, dare I say as good as dolphin with jetpack, maybe even better :p

Adding The Status Bar Back
Brand New Custom Holo Theme
New White Icons
Updated Design
Smaller APK File Size
New Home Button For Tablets
Upgraded Coding
Updated Tablet UI
Updated UI Icons
Speed Improvements
Brand New App Icon
And More

Main thing I don't like about it, is that it has very poor tab control, in fact you can't even view what tabs and how many you have open! Plus lack of quick thumb controls too........

But everything else is ace.

This new Gmail is a bit pants. Sometimes the swype action doesn't work and other times using the selection tick boxes to mass delete doesn't work. It's clearly not a final release.

Saving grace is pinch to zoom I guess but I might Titanium restore original Gmail for now.

Sorry I use Firefox.

The new Gmail bug is limited to if swipe gesture is enabled it seems. Turn it off in settings and the check box method has no issues.

I couldn't get the new GMail installed on my GNex. Copied to my device, copied to system/app, deleted current version and changed permissions but it just crashes :(

Nooo Uninstall Gmail then reboot then install the new Gmail using a file manager as you would any other apk!

Ok so having never looked into it before, could someone give me a quick step guide to how to achieve some of these amazing home screens etc

http://minimalandroid.com/

Something like,

1) Root
2) Rom
3) Launcher?
4) Make custom icons?

I'd poke around the XDA forum but frankly that place is a complete mess. Every thread title is 50 words long with just about every character on a keyboard somewhere in it.

Ergh, serves me right for following XDA instructions.. not sure how any of them got it working, your method worked though, ta :)

I clicked through on a random picture and it took me to a deviantart page which explained what apps he was using.

No need for root just loads of time!

I wouldnt say Root is necessary at all. All you need is a flexible launcher. One that you can change the grid sizes to get everything lined up nicely. I personally use Apex, but Nova is similar. I really like the Metro Station icons.

Find a background to like. Find some custom icons that you like. There are a good theming threads on XDA where people describe exactly what they are using.

Hold down on the Web page and select the drop down arrow and "find" :)

Thanks, but if I long press on a web page, no menu comes up. Odd.

On another note, how does one hide the Jelly Bean keyboard? For example if I'm typing in a field but want to view another part of a web page or see the submit button or something. Gingerbread was just a long menu press or a soft key. Back button works but I'm not sure if I'm missing something.

Just long press on a blank space and it should bring the highlight/copy/cut tools up and then select the top right small arrow and you get the below sub-menu:

Regarding the keyboard, when you hit the back button the keyboard should minimise, or just tap somewhere on the web page and it should close and if you're using swiftkey you can just set a gesture i.e. when you swipe down the keyboard should hide.

The best game for android has been updated and there is now some new space levels! :D

Thanks. Long press only does anything when I long press on a word, which brings up the search and copy menus only. Strange, must be a bug, maybe something to do with my ROM.

Hmm, possibly. I am just on stock sense 4.1/android 4.0.4 on my S.

What you could just do for now, is set a gesture for the "find" feature.

Doesn't look the same as the method above, but it does the job :)

EDIT:

Damn! those new space levels in granny smith are extremely difficult! Stuck on the first level :o Zero gravity is a ***** :p

Tried Jetpack on Dolphin and it does make browsing a heck of a lot snappier. Only problem I find with it now though however is text reflow is broken, and starting the app up takes a lot longer. Also the battery drain is insane... Uninstalled it as I felt it just made my already lagging phone even laggier...
