Essential Android Apps

The part that I hate the most and the part that you love the most :D

Tried it many times to, but personally not keen on the UI, too safari in some places and didn't find it as quick as quick ICS browser etc.

It would be nice to have something like the following:

Best home Launchers:

Go launcher

Apex
and Nova (requires android V4+)

Best gallery apps:

Gallery ICS

QuickPic

Best Keyboards:

SwiftKey

etc. etc.

But....

I think a new thread would be pointless because most people will post asking what the best apps are anyway :p, regardless of how detailed and up to date the first post is :p

True.

But not much point in this thread either. Scrolling through for essential app on this thread is a pain.

Any volunteers want to start a thread??

Benjo's idea is better.

Really is pointless keeping the OP up to date as I said people will just post asking what app to use etc. anyway :p

If its kept up to date there will be no need to ask the question. Everything will be there and people will mention the apps and op will be updated. Unless you have followed this thread from the start its useless. Needle in hey stack

I know, I agree that there would be no need and it is a good idea, but as has been shown in pretty much every thread with up to date OP for other things, it still doesn't stop the majority of people asking the same questions all the time, people don't even read the last page of a thread or a few posts above to see what widget/icons are being used in screenshots.

Unless a don actively cleans the thread of people asking "what the best app for this....... is" and warning people to read the OP first etc. then it will work out fine.

Actually, the best idea would be for there to be a thread keeper who opens the thread with an opening post as follows.

They create and maintain a list of categories that apps fall under (i.e. launchers, sports GPS trackers, browsers) and this will make up the first post.

The second post contains a review template such as:
Application name: (as link to play store/other source)
Price: Free/Price
Screenshots:
Other similar applications the user has tried:
Why they like it better than the other similar apps:
What they think it missing/what they would like to see added (features etc):

A user can then take the template, complete it and then post it to the thread. The thread maintainer then links to the users review post and archives it under the category that applications belongs to. For example:

Browsers:
  • Firefox (As reviewed by mrk)
  • Chrome (As reviewed by Mekrel)
  • HoloWeb (As reviewed by Nexus18)

This means that people who are after a browser, can see all the applications that have been reviewed and make an informed choice based on each review. Currently the thread is a mash of application recommendations that do not serve any purpose as there's little detail as to why they're recommended.

^^ liking it.

Nexus i understand what your saying. But if a mod gas to clean it then so be it its there job. Good threads like this bring a lot of people to the forum add then steers them to there main site (the shop)

Just look at the views this page has had and in all honesty the thread is rubbish

I think some of us should have a chat on irc or G+ etc then start the new thread, saves all of us making the same thread by accident :p

Lol

Well count me out im not doing it.

Who ever makes it reserve the first couple of posts so there's plenty of room for expansion

If two want to do it may be share it. One on post one and one on post two.

Would be good if games were on post two

I'm just trying for the first time to make a customised home screen, and I was hoping some kind soul could point me at a suitable widget to just display a simple icon indicator for signal strength and WiFi on my homewscreen. I want to get rid of the taskbar at the top and those are the only things I'd miss. cheers!

Ok so having never looked into it before, could someone give me a quick step guide to how to achieve some of these amazing home screens etc

http://minimalandroid.com/

Something like,

1) Root
2) Rom
3) Launcher?
4) Make custom icons?

I'd poke around the XDA forum but frankly that place is a complete mess. Every thread title is 50 words long with just about every character on a keyboard somewhere in it.

Have a look at this site - http://mycolorscreen.com/ - most of the screens people upload have info on the apps used etc, should be just what your looking for

The Bard's Tale is on sale at £1.86. Was waiting for this to drop!

Not sure I want a "full scale massive 3D epic RPG" on my tablet or phone *BUT* I am interested if you get the original Bards Tale as part of the package like one of the screenies suggests!

Can anyone confirm this is the case and if so, how does it play?? I must have spend hundreds of hours playing the original BT through time and again!!!! :)
