Essential Android Apps

Only if the sources aren't trusted or/and the apks are dodgy ones i.e. pron :p

Have installed many many apks from reputable sources and not had any problems.

You can't yet, they seem to remove themselves over time anyway though. My S2 has vanished off there, oldest now being the S3 and Nexus 7.

My essential apps are:

Handcent sms - love its ability to interrupt a screen, even the lock screen if desired.
Waze - great social sat nav that can only get better
Swiftkey - wouldn't know how to handle the default keyboard now
Bt SmartTalk - only came across this yesterday but its brilliant. If you have a bt line then you can use this to make your calls over wifi or 3g and it uses the home line plan, mine is all standard calls free. Applied even if using it abroad - obviously data charges apply if applicable. But I'm even using it at home for convenience
Falcon Pro - good twitter app, particularly good at handling certain people like children if you want to quickly see their activity
Bacon Reader - reditt app, i wasn't into reditt but this is getting me into it
Kingsoft Office - use this for my office docs
Lol chat - good league of Legends chat client
Lol memento - good lol champ info
Zeebox - tv schedules
Bus times - uk bus times
Rail tracker

Games - word feud and hexagon

Swiftkey seems great, just wish it wasn't £3 to keep. Guess I'm used to cheap iOS apps falling over themselves to give you their stuff.

I don't mind paying off the app delivers which in this case it does and the trial does give enough time to assess

I think you both maybe right, I take it the price has always been £3? Is there any app price checkers out there? I use appshopper for iOS which is great, haven't paid for anything in years. :D

What I do need is a more accurate volume control the 1-10 scale on the htc one is hopeless, level 1 is loud enough for me for a max setting, really want to quiet it down, like a 1-100 scale. Any ideas?

Strangely I used an app on the S3 ages ago that had percentage scale in single digits and you could ringer rotate the dial accordingly as well. It pretty much replaced the stock volume OSD and I cannot remember the name! Someone else here must remember :o

One thing I would never do is install an app from "another" source. Decent paid apps are cheap enough to not have to pirate then!

Sources other than the play store are not automatically dodgy!!! Humble Bundle deals come immediately to mind. Also, Amazon app store needs to be loaded as "another" source .

mrk, can't you sift through your appbrain list for a name? or doesn't it show your S3 apps any more? Or maybe the play store of 'other apps in my library'? That still shows some of the apps I had installed on my Spica :)

Sounds like just what I'm looking for for my other half - she's breastfeeding our little'un and the lowest volume setting is a little too loud for her to watch films when she's awake at 2am :)

I'll have a look at the library shortly to see if it's in there but I've not used appbrain in a while sadly!

Oh yes I know that! I just Googled the black mart name and it said you get paid apps for free which automatically sounded like a dodgy thing!

I've been a slideme market user myself in the past :)

I've been fiddling today with FolderSync (app to sync files between my phone and NAS for my needs mostly) and finally got it working after giving up on it before,

N00b question: Should I set it up to use SFTP or WebDAV?
They both work, and i guess I want the quickest/most secure one, but not sure what that'd be?

Still fiddling with my S3 lte after coming from a 9900. The one thing I miss is being able to quickly select a sound profile , ie loud, normal, quiet , office etc , is there an app for this ?
