The easiest way to create and install custom ringtones that I have found is to use iRinger :-

http://www.iringer.net/

Creates the ringtone you want and then sends it to the correct dir on your phone ready to be used straight away with no faffing around in iTunes.

Oh and its free to use too which is nice.

I think this thread title is an oxymoron.

I've had my iPhone a fair while now and don't think there are ANY essentials ones. Almost all the games are throw-away and the apps are rarely anything other than 'quite useful' at a push. There are a few stand out exceptions, but considering the sheer amount of apps you'd think there would be more.

People have different ideas about what is exceptional/essential. There are apps like "Things" which I think is utterly useless, but is very popular with a lot of people.

It would be nice to have a new thread though - this one is just full of app sales or constant rinse and repeat of previously mentioned apps. Games shouldn't even be in a list of essential apps either!

So, 3 new threads please.

Essential Apps - a maintained list of applications that are extremely useful and/or entertaining.

Games - a list of games.

Sales - Heads up on new apps sales/free apps etc.

EDIT: And for the love of God if you mention an app, have the common courtesy to at least say what it is/does. A name and a link is no good because I don't want to have to leave the page just to see what you think is an essential app!
