Essential iPhone Apps

Thanks very much for that mate, really appreciate you taking the time :)

Is there any way to send a magic packet for WoL from an iphone and if so, how to configure that? :D

Cheers

No problem :)

There's an app called iWOL (£1.79) that allows you to send a magic packet over the internet or LAN to a specific machine. Can't say I've tried it, but don't see why it wouldn't work.

Again, if you're doing it from the WAN, you'll have to forward the port (port 7 UDP I think) from the WAN to the target machine. The downside with this is that you can only power up one machine on your LAN from outside said LAN. If this isn't a problem for you then this app will probably do what you want.

If you want the ability to power up multiple machines on your LAN from outside the LAN, this approach is useless I think.

nah its just the one I want to remotely startup, which happens to be the jaadu one too :)

Cheers for the help though buddy, will give it all a try tonight and get iWOL :)

TimBrad - could you make a thread how you get on with this and everything? Its a very interesting idea that makes Jaadu much more appealing...

Now I have to work out if my mobo does WOL...

ps3ud0

You're welcome, and in that case it should all work fine :)

Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but if you're opening up a machine to allow RDP access from the net, make sure you've got a strong password.

As ps3ud0 said, let us know how you get on, I'm interested. A new thread is a good idea I think, to avoid derailing this one too much.

Sure thing, I'll change my password form "tim" now I think :D

It'll barely be used in day to day, but it'll be nice to know it CAN be :)

ow to also figure out what I need to change on W7.. lol :D

Thread coming if/when this works :)

Just before I buy iWOL, magic packet can be sent to a machine that is off, not sleeping can't it? As I don't leave the machine sleeping at all, day or night!

Thanks :)

With WoL enabled in the BIOS, I believe the computer can be in "soft off" state - ie. shut down but still connected to its power supply, and will still power up when it hears the magic packet. Of course, sleeping and hibernating computers will also 'hear' the magic packet.

As long as:
1) the NIC is capable of listening and decoding a magic packet,
2) the motherboard supports supplying the NIC with power even in shut down state (if your mobo supports it, I expect this to be a BIOS option),
3) the motherboard supports magic packet powerups,

then WoL will work.

My fav apps are

IM+
iBlacklist
LogMeIn
feX (I like this because ive always wanted to add pics to my contacts, but could never be botherd)
Rooms (IRC just dont seem to be the same anymore, or maybe im looking in the wrong place, but i still like this app)
Backgrounder
SaiSuke (It's nice to sync with gmail calender, and i hated the look of the iPhones app)

They are the ones i use most anyway

iFooty and iFootyWorld pretty good - nice way to catch up with games - will probably buy the plus version once the season has started...

Keep the suggestions coming in - loving the stuff Ive uncovered so far (mostly mentioned here).

Whats a good app for F1/MotoGP stuff?

Not having much luck at all with Jaadu, worked fine when at home and connected via the same router, now from work via WiFi or 3g I'm just getting "The server clsed the connection" :(

Wishing I had gone with logmein so far as I use it day to day on web versions :(

Thanks for this, all my contacts now have pictures :)

Only problem is, I had to match every single one manually, not a problem as it only took 5 mins, what is a problem is that it has now cleared all my matches. So if I want to sync again for updated photos I have to match them all manually again :(

Really? thats never happend to me. Just opend it up and i have 64 of 82 contacts are matched. 12 need to be synced (First time i opened it after first use lol)
