EURO 2012: Players to be booked if they leave the pitch due to racism

Uefa president Michel Platini says that any players who walk off the pitch at Euro 2012 due to racial abuse will be booked. A BBC Panorama programme highlighted racism incidents at grounds in Poland and Ukraine, who co-host Euro 2012. Manchester City and Italy striker Mario Balotelli threatened to walk off the pitch if he believed he was a victim.

Platini said: "It's a yellow card. It's not a player - Mr Balotelli - who's in charge of refereeing."

Platini insists officials will deal with any racist incidents that occur during the tournament, which begins on Friday.

"It's the referee who takes these decisions. Referees can finish the game. They have this power in case of racism," Platini told the BBC sports editor David Bond.

"That is, I think, the best way to protect the game against racism."

"The referee has been given advice and he can stop the game if there are problems."

****!

A referee stopping a game would be a disaster for UEFA and I don't believe for one second it will ever happen regardless of how much racist abuse players receive :(

Seems perfectly logical to me.

What he actually means is that a player leaving the field for ANY voluntary reason (so not an injury), will receive a yellow card, which is perfectly acceptable.

It is the referee who is in charge of a game and responsible for it. Also i dont think any player who is willing to leave the pitch is really going to be at all fussed by the referee waving a yellow card at him for it.

So if the racism is really bad, as in entire sections of the crowd chanting it, they expect the players to just ignore it?

Ridiculous imo.

Its simple. Leaving the field of play without the permission of an official is a bookable offence. These players need to MTFU, they're professionals and shouldn't be affected by name-calling. However, if it was bad enough, as in being tageted with missiles, then yes, a game should be stopped.

All this talk of potential racism as the Euros is getting on my extremely white moobs.

While this sounds really bad, it's going to give players a reason to try and get matches cancelled if their team is losing. I wouldn't put it past some of them.

I think if this happened, the section of the crowd guilty of it would find their team expelled from the tournament. Or at least, that's the stance UEFA should be taking. Instant removal (yes, even the host nations) if serious enough.

No ref would have the balls to stop a game, neither would UEFA have the balls to kick out any team, let alone one of the hosting nations.

Platini is all words words words. They really need to stamp their foot and make an example of someone.

Yeah, black players should just get on with it when they hear the monkey chants.

Whilst unlikely to happen a referee does have the power to abandon any game if they feel the players are in danger or any reason that warrants it.

We've all seen matches abandoned for adverse weather or unsuitable playing conditions, but we've seen a match abandoned for a player's life being in danger - Muamba anyone?

If at the Euros a player is physically in danger from the crowd (for being black) that potentially puts all players at risk.

'Monkey chants' have been aimed at the Dutch national team during an open training session today from a section of the crowd at the Krakow stadium. :o

Do you not think that gives racism an air of legitimacy?

No, but making a big issue of what is no more than playground name calling is. The sayings, turn the other cheek and let the football do the talking spring to mind. For me, being called black or ****** is no different than being called whitey, fatty or ugly. They're just names.

Sol Campbell had a point when he noted that UEFA could have made a much greater effort to get the host nations to tackle racism, they've basically ignored it yet doubtless have given a laundry list of conditions that have to be met for sponsors etc. If that's not an example of misplaced priorities then I'm not sure what is.

If there is racist abuse then I hope the players will walk off irrespective of the yellow cards they will receive. Sport can and should be used as a method to highlight the unacceptability of certain behaviours.
