EURO 2012: Players to be booked if they leave the pitch due to racism

The question is , what happens if the team does walk off ? Does the result stand ? Is it declared a draw ? Is the match forfeited ?

The less scrupulous of teams could 'cry wolf' if they want to ??

Euro 2012: Netherlands 'subjected to racist chants while training'

Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel says the team's black players were subjected to monkey chants at an open training session in Poland.

He described the alleged abuse in Krakow as a "real disgrace".

Uefa said an incident had occurred but it was a protest about the city not being given any Euro 2012 matches, The Times reported.

However, Van Bommel said: "Open your ears. If you did hear it, and don't want to hear it, that is even worse."

I thought UEFA would ignore racism but I didn't think they would go as far as trying to cover it up. They aren't interested in fighting racism, they're only interested in protecting their best interests which is themselves.

It's not really the same though is it? One person is a monumental **** by choice, the other happened to be born a certain colour.

Well no, but abuse is still abuse regardless of the subject matter.

LOL at the Terry comment. :D How he's still able to wear an England shirt is beyond me, but that's for another thread.

I'm inclined to agree with him. I don't really see how non-physical racist abuse differs from other form of verbal abuse... ? Sticks and stones? What's so awful about it? Monkey chants? So what? How is that any worse than a full football stadium targeting John Terry and his womanising?

Or are we concerned racist chanting will lead to other forms of abuse?
That is, I think, many people's concern, or at least it's mine, where does the abuse stop, with a player being hurt?? We see it happen when players are targeted with missiles and it isn't even racially motivated.

I just love the "they're getting paid a lot of money so they are allowed to get abused" line from certain people in this thread.

At what point do you draw the line in earnings when 'legitimately' abusing someone? If you see a poor black person will you say "good morning" to them but then dole out nazi salutes and monkey noises to the wealthy black person you pass next?

No one has said that footballers or wealthy people are allowed to be abused.

However, personal abuse has been seen for a long time at football matches and is deemed acceptable as part of the atmosphere. Some of the chanting that goes on in this country is disgusting and in poor taste but we laugh it off as the norm. Players accept it as part of football too but that doesn't make it ok. Racist chanting is no different, its just noise made by a bunch of idiots aimed at players, but again, that doesn't make it ok.

Hard to know who to believe, MvB is serial moaner, but I'm more inclined to believe the players here than UEFA. Van Bommel has at least suggested the right thing to do and that is to speak to the referee should it happen during a game.

I think if any players are subjected to racial abuse, every single player should walk off the pitch. I've seen first hand the effect racial abuse can have on people (My best friend committed suicide due to it.)

If UEFA and the **** that they are won't do anything about the racism in football, then the players should be united in doing something themselves.

I agree.

I know people have said it's 'just' abuse, but it's really not.

If I was a coach, I'd bring my players off and I'd ask the referee to stop the game.

I'm with Platini though, players just can not walk off the pitch willy nilly, so it's a booking. The players / coaches should talk to the referee to stop the game if they suffer any racist abuse, the referee's shouldn't be afraid to stop the game and UEFA (I'm sure they will) should support them 100%.

UEFA can only do so much to deal with racism, in certain places in the world, racism is a huge problem within society too and it will take much more support and policies in place to help deal with this.

Racism, has no place in the world, no matter how much you down play it or try and excuse it. There is no excuse, it's inexcusable.

I am quite staggered by the views of some people in here. How on earth can you compare calling someone a **** for being a worthless human being to targeting someone simply because of the colour of their skin.

I really hope the players don't put up with any racism during the tournament. UEFA have already made it quite clear that they will do everything in their power to ignore any racism and pass it off as something else. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the referees are all told to try to continue matches regardless of the fans.

Its just a bit sad that there are still racist people in this day and age. Anyone with half a brain should realise how fundamentally stupid it is to hate someone because of the colour of their skin.

No your the pathetic one, if you think this sort of abuse is acceptable:rolleyes:

Come off it... "abuse" ??

lol

These are grown men.. So it seems its ok to rant and rave, scream at the players and call them and their families all the names under the sun, but as soon as you make a monkey chant somehow thats some sort of sin of the devil?

Get a grip.

Not everyone likes black people you know, everyone is entitled to behave the way they wish in their own country.

A bit of chanting is nothing. However if a black player was stabbed, or hurt in someway sure, then thats out of order.

Monkey noises however are hilarious, and no better or worse than any normal football banter that goes on at grounds all around the world.

Its a non issue.

Whining little ***** like Rio and Sol Campbell need to grow up and realise that they are not special just because they are black, nor does anyone owe them anything just because their ancestors we slaves.

While racism is obviously a terrible thing. How is someone doing monkey chants to a black player any more hurtful then chanting how ugly carlos tevez is due to his accident for example.

Not sure if trolling or stupid.jpg

I'm gunning for stupid myself.

So you think that we should just accept people abusing others because of the colour of their skin. Its OK because some people are just racist and hate black people.

When people have unjustifiable prejudices, its not that hard for them to turn those into violence. Young children watching the game will be told "we are giving him abuse because he is black" which obviously is a great thing for a developing mind.
