EV general discussion

Following on from my last post about towing with a Model Y, we took our caravan out at the weekend for a first test weekend away.

We picked a little site 94 miles away from home and just went for it. The tow out was a breeze, as you all know, a car with 400hp isn’t going to have a problem towing. So what about the range?

It was 1C when we left on Friday morning and we mostly chilled on motorway tucked in on the inside lane with the trucks at 56mph and averaged 567wh/mile so an effective range of 132 miles in winter. We left on 97% (battery preconditioning was working hard on a a cold soaked battery) and got to the destination with 24%.

We charged up on a mix of the granny charger on the electric hook up and an 11kw public charger in the local town.

The way home was more interesting with storm Isha, bearing down on Sunday. I thought I’d test what the consumption would be if we drove at 60mph directly into a 40mph head wind with no drafting. The answer is 700wh/mile over about 30 miles! The car/caravan was pretty stable on the easterly leg with the cross winds, I was expecting the exposed sections to be more hairy than it was.

We tucked it in with the trucks for the rest of the journey at 56mph and the final efficiency was 584wh/mile. It was about 8C when we left which made a big difference to the first leg.

In all honesty, the extra 4 mph makes almost zero difference to travel time but a big impact on efficiency (even without the wind), so in conclusion it’s just not worth it. Find a truck doing 56 and just stick with it with TACC.

I’d expect spring/summer/autumn range will be around 150 miles.

Wow, that's significant. And I'm guessing hooking up to Superchargers en route will be more difficult too if you are on a longer journey to France or something :(

UK - yes, there will be a bit of unhitching required, France not so much, loads more chargers and way less charger congestion.

If it’s quiet, I will just charge up Tycan style (sideways blocking multiple stalls) rather than spending a few mins unhitching.

My sympathies :D

Thanks :D

You do see a more more ‘interesting driving’ when slumming it with the truckers. I feel sorry for the trucker I was following that nearly jackknifed because a car decided to ‘take a late exit’ across the chevrons from lane 3 which they were centimetres away from collecting. It took him a good 10 seconds to get it back under control.

The number of slow pokes in the left lane I flew past while only doing 60 was also rather surprising.

I expect a couple of them were watching in anticipation for my EV to burst into flames at any moment as I overtook.

so where in UK do Jaguar do the batttery pack repairs - if you've seen Monroe videos on tesla pack tear-downs (dry ice blasting), and, it's similarly complex,
the equipment isn't going to be at every dealership, so must be trailering cars to an appropriately setup facility, for efficient turnaround.

They arnt glued in with potting compound… #legacyauto traits where you can repair stuff, costs are covered by cell suppliers in this situation anyway.

'don't worry we are doing this test super safely and being respectful of other road users'

Then proceeds to drive faster than the trailer allows, drive faster than the speed limit, do a 0-60 on a live lane while towing an overweight trailer on cold greasy roads.

God bless America.

Don't forget he's just built a bunker in his garden - well the shell at least.

Wasn't the 0-60 on the slip road to the freeway, with nothing behind him? After all he has to build up his speed to match the freeway he's joining.

Needlessly stopping on a live slip road so you can film yourself doing a 0-60 isn't exactly demonstrating safe operation of a motor vehicle no matter how you spin it.

It's not like they stopped for a few seconds, its clear from the position of the vehicle they would have been letting traffic pass as they set up to get the shot.

Subsequently watched video of i-pace battery module replacement https://youtu.be/Vpltw7jhmKo courtesy of - can all dealers could do it.

Similar thought - with those ~25K second hand polestars , seems they have 8 dealers/garages for the UK, OK one close to me in Cambridge, but, would be a no go if you were living in Wales/bristol/scotland.

Looks relatively simple to just sub out a module to be honest.

Give me a pair of trademark Edd China orange gloves and some non conductive underpants and I'd give it a shot.

i miss Edd China on wheeler dealers.. indeed i gave up on the program soon after. (sorry total aside there!)
He has his own YT now. It started well but he ran out of steam and bought rights to his segments from Wheeler Dealers. So some original stuff and some repeats.
