LOL - chancellor scrapping the vat on Ev's (hybrids too ?) -
yes, I'm sure manufactureres would like that (which uk ones specifically - jaguar ?), will that really help arrive at zero carbon faster -
moreover it will subsidise the richer car purchaser, and reduce their motoring costs versus the poorer customers.
The manufacturers could instead reduce the margin they are taking on Bev's, which are cheaper to manufacture than hybrids,
if the toyota ev expert, linked earlier, is correct.

I assume, nonetheless that BIK's are fixed for a few years, even if the electric subsidy does get modified in the budget.

A better solution would be to penalise purchases of high emission vehicles through a levy based on its value. That would put them in line with the upfront cost of an EV and make it a ‘no brainier’ to purchase the EV version. That’s pretty much what Norway did and now look at their adoption rates.

You may as well just increase fuel duty, it's the great equaliser. Buy an inefficient vehicle, pay more. Do more miles, pay more. Drive like a loon, pay more. Do short journeys (i.e. population centre mileage), pay more.

I guess you've seen by now its an industry request ... but, which specific UK company will benefit ?
we'll be popular with Greta, but, even for jaguar/jlr mentioned, will the additional volume/profit, the manufacturers see, be re-patriated as corporation tax.
the brexit trade deal can, attach an import duty on component parts(batteries) coming into the UK to compensate.

that was how the gilet jaunes protests started in France, diesel taxation impacting the, especially rural, poorer folks.
 
Which is why a levy is a more socially acceptable idea. People who are buying new expensive cars can’t complain they are hard done by. Cheap cars tend to be lower emission.

You also would also start on things like range rovers and other ‘SUV’s’, trucks and sports cars etc. and not 1L fiestas.
 
And people on low wages actually need to be able to afford to get to work.

Public transport is no help because it's mostly useless outside of London.

I do. Have a pedestrian cable cover and 10m Type 2 cable. Where there's a will there's a way. In terms of air quality, which is often overlooked in the EV conversation, it's exactly these dense, urban areas that need EVs the most. Those with drives and garages - on the whole - are likely to be nowhere near an area that has high levels of air pollution.

Of course in flats then parking directly outside is impossible, and similarly for a lot of houses in particularly urban environments (I struggle here sometimes but I'll just have to deal with it).

I don't commute by car but I can charge at work if needed, via a granny lead for the time being, and my OH does commute and she can charge at work for free.

I've got a Nest Cam set up in a similar place to the photo for a) general security b) protection against false trip claims or whatever and c) to alert me via a zone if someone moves their car so I can move into the space. There's also a small solar motion security light that I turn on what charging (11pm-7am is when the cover/cable is out) so they can see the cover when it's dark, though there is a street light near as well, as you can see.

If we had an ev manufacturer then, like Merkel, chancellor could increase ev subsidies to illicitly (so its not anti eu?) support our home manufacturers, or, if you don't mind a lhd, could you import one of those ?

interesting - obvious question - so did you need public liability cover in case someone trips over it ?

Like most personal insurance (bar motor) nothing's required. I'm not even sure you could get PL insurance as an individual for such a thing? Common sense prevails, hopefully. I even have a letter from the Mayor saying "we want to encourage citizens and businesses to transition to low emissions vehicles wherever possible. Bristol City Council have no plans that I am aware of to clamp down on the installation of charging points in homes without driveways". The only way of charging an EV without a driveway is to run the cable across the pavement and I've taken every precaution feasibly possible including an industry-grade cable cover and motion light, plus the thing is nigh on impossible to trip up on anyway, but if someone 'does' (or, equally, complain) I'll cross that bridge when I came to it via moving to another planet.

Fortunately all my immediate neighbours were more excited about me getting it than I was I swear.

This has already happened. Plenty of quite obvious rules and regulations in place to favour VAG/Merc over Tesla. Autopilot radius, ‘luxury’ tax, import tax etc.

The EU is a corrupt neo liberal money printing machine, not a force for climate change or progress.

I was informed by my local council that there was "no way in hell" I could run a cable across the pavement, even with a cover. And besides, it wouldn't last more than a few hours before someone nicked it anyway.

They wanted a glimpse of the future in the present ;)

Great job with the cable setup, a job very well done. Sadly most people are only willing to find excuses to not bother, rather than trying to find a solution for the time being.
