EV general discussion

I'd be surprised if a cable gets that hot when there's just 7kW passing through it. Certainly not to a point where it can't be ran in a channel.

If it was one of the Supercharger cables supplying full power, fair enough.

So dangerous and awkward this EV charging lark. Not.

But the outter material can still get damaged and water get in...

If you laid a cable like that in any working environment you'd be told to get rid of it.

Do you honestly think that the people making cables design to be left plugged into cars for extended periods of time while they are parked outside haven't thought about water ingress? Think, McFly...

Looking at the E Tron lease deals today, they can barely give them away. Will have major consequences for fleet C02 later in the year, they needed to sell 170,000 to make the cut. Last year they managed something like 27000 and now they’ve stopped making them?

Where are you looking? Cheapest deals I can see for an eTron are £500+ PCM with just 8000miles.

I couldn't quite believe it either, which is why I ordered one. Although I cancelled and re-ordered last week as it came down in price again.

Decided on the sport model in metallic silver, 2yr 7,500 miles for £348 a month. This is a works scheme so that price including insurance, tax, servicing, gap, breakdown cover and a free home charger. When you consider the tax breaks, fuel and running costs the car is almost paying for itself. No brainer.

Audi think delivery end of April which would be good.

I'm still struggling to understand why they are so cheap on these deals, as my spec came to £65k. There is also an option to buy after the 2yr, so that could be interesting. The only thing I can think of, is despite it being a great car, not many people want to spend £65k on an electric audi. Most people in the know will maybe wait for the Q4, and people not in the know won't be buying an EV anyway unless it's either a Kona or a Tesla.

Good for me though, I went out in one a couple of weeks ago and visited two dealerships recently. It's a very, very nice car indeed. Very impressive.

There are some pretty good deals on the e-tron. Car Wow have the base model for under £45k once the £3,500 grant is taken into account. Haven't looked around, so you may be able to get it even cheaper.

Leases from £380/month with 9 months up front, 2 years/8k miles.

This is good and I will always welcome these sorts of announcements.

But why does this need government grants to do in the UK when Tesla’s have been doing this for years on their own?

Given the amount of support the oil industry gets, I would think that the Gov need to be offering some support to get companies off the ground to compete with the likes of BP/Shell/etc.

Tesla have had subsidies themselves - eg Vegas. which help finance the infrastructure, ... whether they are bigger/smaller contributions than other manufacturers

Shell with their forecourt chargers are getting into the game, but I guess for most of their premises there isn't the space for multiple bays to make it really viable,
so, moreover, they(shell...) need to get int bed with the NCP/other car park providers, and supermarkets (au revoir home delivery) who have the land.

Gov.uk have removed all 'Luxury' VED on BEV-cars above 40k from 1/4/17 until 2025. So if you paid this you should be able to claim it back. Good news. :)

But...

The Government has promised a ‘comprehensive package of tax and spending reforms’ to make it cheaper to buy zero- and low-emission vehicles. Key to this is the extension of the plug-in car grant until 2022/23. However, its value has now been reduced to £3,000 (down from £3,500) and now excludes cars over £50,000. The Chancellor has set aside £403m to fund this, alongside over £129m to extend the plug-in van grant, taxi and motorcycle grants for the same period.

Giving with one hand and taking away with the other.

It’s a good thing the grant has been extended, but let’s be clear, if you are spending £50k on a car (or leasing/financing a £50k car) you really don’t need a discount from the government on the price.

^^ This.

Or maybe it will help them to bring the costs below £50k, for cars that otherwise may have been £52,000 etc.
