EV general discussion

It is well above my level so just information filtering down but looks like it will be awhile until EV vans are a reality where I work - apparently they were getting 78-91 miles real world range in actual usage, ~120 miles with just 1-2 people and nothing onboard, compared to WLTP 180-200 miles, where our average trip distance is ~72 miles and the diesel vans are able to do well in excess of 300 miles under the same circumstances - some of them quite a bit higher than that.

I had this running in the background while doing some boring admin tasks and the next video that YT autoplayed was from later in the series where he was looking at the battery pack. Such a weird design but also quite clever from a scalability POV. Each module is a complete self contained 400V unit with pre-charge, +ve and -ve contactors with the modules then connected in parallel to make up the pack.

Why weird? Because you are now switching multiple sets of contactors rather than one. Why clever? Because to make a SWB version just remove some modules. Making a bigger vehicle? Whack a few more in!
 
Ultimately the Russian sanctions put the nail in the coffin for Arrival. Shame really. A good friend went there for a few years working on the products.

The benefit is not for going from LWB to SWB necessarily? the optimal cost is one set of electronics if you know its SWB or LWB.. most modern EV platforms are based on modular batteries (e.g. VAG MEB is based on 6.4kwh (usable) modules, 7 in the 45kwh, 9 in the 58khw, 12 in the 77kwh) so already easily scaleable and only one set of electronics required.

The benefit of the arrival design is that you can simply add them anytime, so I presume they can offer a much larger product mix and upgrade path for customers.

The weakness is all the repeated electronics / PTCs etc which will probably add more overall cost from an efficiency point of view, and I note there is no cooling option, just heating, unlike most modern platforms that heat and cool to keep within optimal parameters.

New car on order after our q8 etron was cancelled due to them ending production. The lease company we were using had 700 q8 etron on order so I think Audi have cut them a deal to smooth them (and customers like me) over. Ordered a q6 etron s-line Quattro, with the upgraded tech pack (hud, sound system and lighting), 15k miles per year, insurance, service, tax, tyres, free charge point for £430 a month. happy with that. It is salary sacrifice so it does impact pension but that’s the amount my net pay is reduced by each month.

Correct. Paying 30k for it though :). 2k on the clock.

For the price and against what else is available, plus needing a car relatively quickly, it seemed like a decent option. Doesn’t need much prep being so new, so should hopefully get it soon before/after Christmas.

Yeah seems like there are loads of dealers off loading the demo cars that are fully kitted out, all similar prices. I think if it were me I would have bought a £13k Mini-E and kept that for a year then picked up the model you just bought for ~£20k if I liked them still, especially as it is your first BEV and they are prone to heavy depreciation even with a good deal upfront.

I am sure your Mrs will love it, nice Christmas present. :)
