EV general discussion

Meh. Doing Cornwall at least twice later this year, I’m sure it’ll be just as uneventful.

Trust me it is, did almost 600 miles to there and back the other weekend, in the same day, the most dramatic thing that happened was me helping a Tesla driver open his frozen charge flap.

I love the sound of a howling V engine , an EV will never match it...

But as I have owned 4 pot diesel turbos for the last 30 years what do I know :D

I'll happily switch to an EV when they match my own personal driving use.

Did my first long-ish journey in an EV this week, had to go up north (for all my sins), 150 miles each way.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. I used Gridserve at a Moto Services on the way up near destination, had a poo, coffee and a bite to eat whilst it topped up to 90%. Had enough to go around Wakey and back down again a day later.

*but us ICE drivers can drive for 300 miles without stopping, all that time you have lost because of a battery" :)

On a coach holiday last week and the driver saw me looking at a charger at a services which started a conversation where he came out with every EV myth.
On the coach he tried to outsmart me listening to the radio where power had been cut during Storm Euwyn (Sp).
"How would you go on with your EV with no electricity?"
"How would you fill up your ICE with no electricity?"
"I've got petrol in it"
"Well I've got electricity in mine, when I left it on the car park it had 230 miles in it"
He seriously said this "but it will all be gone by the time we get back" :)
An OAP then chirps in "My EV has got at least 350 miles in it when I get back and during a recent power cut we plugged an extension lead into the EV and ran a light and the TV off the car until it came back on"
Sadly the driver wouldn't accept any of it :)

This is the top answer.
We've bought ICE since 1975 and last year we both decided it suited our personal use and we aren't Vegan, we're not into saving the planet or do I have a manbun and little bag on my side.
I may wear ladies undies.

I've been noticing there are some issues with disabled people struggling to use the chargers.

I hope at some point they create new ways of charging. Maybe something similar to wifi charging were you can drive onto a space and do everything via a mobile app.

I think that is an issue tbh, my mother would struggle with using a fast charger those cables are quite cumbersome, but tbf shes at that age where she doesnt go very far. Shes fine with using the phone and apps etc, but the physical aspect, not so fine.

Embarrassing question

Just noticed I have two parking buttons, never really noticed the smaller one to the right.
When I pull it up the car does park but so does the big button which we always use.
What's the difference?

Right hand one is the parking brake at the wheels, rotary knob will put the gearbox into a park mode. I’m not sure where that is exactly on an EV as we don’t have a gearbox but our EQC has it and my Polestar doesn’t…

they’re standard on ICE automatics though!

So is it advisable that when I just stop somewhere with an intention to move a few seconds/minute later to use the red one and when I'm going to leave the car to press the big button?
When in traffic I also use the Autohold so red button for if the wife just runs into a shop quick?

Loads of EVs have park pawls to lock the gearset. There is a gearbox, its just a single speed Final drive reduction, normally between 8-10 reduction ratio.

Most cars have the handbrake come on when you move to park, and then will auto disengage in Drive when you press the accelerator. Mine also had hold on the brake so a firm press will hold the car. Basically I never use the handbrake switch as its only really needed in an emergency situation or sometimes.

I imagine every manufacturer is different as to how they work together - if the display shows which mode you’re in (P/N/D etc) you might be able to tell what’s it’s doing but overall I don’t think it makes much difference. If in doubt, just use the handbrake.

My Polestar doesn’t have it as an option - it may do it all automatically in the background but the shifter is just D/N/R. I have creep mode on so when I come to a stop I put the hand brake on then get out - if creep mode was off then I could just get out as soon as I came to a stop…

Yeah big P button, just does both things together - im not sure the polestar2 has a park pawl anyway so be careful if you park on an icey slope.

Well times are a changin.

This winter on my short commute at traffic lights I see the emissions coming out of my tailpipes in the wing mirror and I look around, and I'm in the minority.

Occasionally I'm the only one!
