EV general discussion

EV is fine for 250 miles a month, I'd question why you would rent a brand new one when there are so many good EV's on the used market these days for reasonable prices.

As with everything it all depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. For 250 miles a month, you can do this cheaper than buying/renting an EV, even with ICE.

Yes yes. You are comparing to something crap. If you have a proper ice as a reference it’s different. I can see this thread has turned into applicance discussion.

But from a financial perspective it also makes no sense. £1000 charger to save what £500 a year on fuel. Come on spending £30k on a car to lose thousands a year is just bonkers

What on earth is a ‘proper ICE?’

Spending 30K on any car is bonkers really - you only live once though!

Pretty sure you are trying to cover 250 miles in a vehicle, it isn't rocket science. Cheaper, better, more info?

EV isn’t the solution to all transport use cases. Nor is it necessarily the cheapest just ‘cos it’s EV innit.

As per the poster stating EV was ‘nicer to drive’ - compared to what? Pretty sure there are ICE that are nicer to drive period.

EV has a place, but it has downsides too. For me, it’s just rather dull and detached. It’s nice to drive, but not necessarily more fun. I want to have fun, whist I can.

But your comment was about not bothering with an EV for 250 miles per month not being worth it?

You didn't state you want to drive a manual BMW M3 etc, just that 250 miles wasn't worth it. I am pretty sure for lots of people it will be better, as most people just want to get from A to B in comfort without hassle, I didn't mention cost either, just asking why you though 250 miles per month in an EV wasn't worth it.

Each to their own, I use a car as a tool and an EV is the best fit for lots of reason, I personally can't be bothered with extra servicing/maintenance, and the stink and inconvenience of a re-fuelling station, or the crap it throws out the back, or the excess noise pollution, or the clunky nature of ICE anymore.

I find my EV nicer to drive than any ICE car I’ve owned - that’s my opinion based on my experience. It isn’t a metric you can measure or put numbers on, it’s just what I feel.

what is that makes it nicer to drive ? indulge us.
(we all develop cognitive dissonance to support life choices - give us the low down on nicer )

e: the chinese consumers ideal is that a car is just a means of getting from A->B without needing any conventional driving - just full self drive;
possibly what the majority of rest of ww population want.

I’ve had all sorts of cars in my lifetime and given the space I’d still have many of them, MX5, focus ST, Mondeo, Boxster, BMW 540i , celica, Lexus LS, MR2, Nissan Serena 2.3D :p I’ve even owned a Datsun Stanza in yellow with a Skoda Estelle spoiler!

For day to day driving, which is 90% of my driving nowadays, EV’s give you the silence and refinement of a Lexus LS and the straight line speed of a decent hot hatch. I’m also starting to appreciate the lack of tailpipe emissions from an EV, I live on a main road and even in my crappy town the is a difference to the smells and noise at peak hours, I guess that could be less Doris’ burning their clutch out!

To me it’s a case of go EV for the mundane tasks to save nice ICE’s for ‘fun’ driving.

I like the silence, the instant turning on and driving away, getting in to a fully warmed and defrosted car, getting into a cooled car, not being concerned about driving short distances or swapping the cars in my driveway over, getting all the power and torque I could ever need instantly, never stalling, minimal maintenance.

It isn’t all perfect, and there are some things I’d prefer I could take from the ICE world, but overall I’m of the EV persuasion.

Well that’s what we talk about 30 to 40k on a car to save a bit of money on a few miles a month.

A proper ice is mine. I have an EV and an ICE. Gives a good perspective if I’m honest.

If you’re not buying a car anyway then I agree - buying a new EV for the sake of saving money makes no sense. If you ARE buying a car then it’s different, but at the end of the day what he chooses to spend his money on is his choice.

I drove (proper) ICE for 23 years before I got my EV - I think that’s a good enough perspective for my own opinion.

Also, “a proper ICE like mine” does not help matters…

Ahh, it’s a penis measuring competition.
Hardly. I can afford both. But I guess opinion suddenly goes to nothing if you have an ICe right. My passion is cars. An EV willl never do that, so also have a car that does that for me. Whilst the EV does the boring stuff of life.

I like cars. I like engines. I like how it makes me feel. Tell me I’m wrong when you talk about kWh /m as the ONLY aspect of EV life. Zzzzz

I said I probably wouldn’t bother and now my mileage has fallen, I stand by that - I don’t save enough money on that mileage to warrant an EV and the inconveniences that come with it - lower range (at the time), purchasing a charger @~1k and the general hassle re time taken to charge. And that’s before the enjoyment factor which is missing over ICE. I can run whatever ICE car I want, with whatever size engine I want and there’s little to no penalty.

Yes but that’s all based on your ownership experience. If - for example - you’ve only driven a 1.0litre eco boost Fiesta (nowt wrong with that), then yes I would expect most EVs to be nicer to drive.

You didn’t state your previous comment was based on your personal experience, you simply said EVs were nicer to drive. Period.

If you just want a tool, to get you from A to B with reasonable comfort etc. Yes, ok EV could be ideal. If you drive, often just for the sheer enjoyment of it, ICE is better.
