EV general discussion

Warmer weather is here and I hit 4.11 miles per kWh in the Leaf today, chuffed to bits with that and with my switch to Tomato and charging at 5p per unit it workes out at a averagee of £1 per 100 miles. :D :D :D

I was on track for that, then opted for a spirited drive home. The Mini is surprisingly capable, although it did show me how well the TTRS threw power to the rear, the Mini is so torque steery.

Well I think he put the CT clamps on wrong......

Megane was one of my fav current EV's.....until the local parking wardens got issued with them by Dudley council (who are skint) to increase revenue. Absolute ****'s :p

Great looking car and gets well written up.

Ahhh, good ole parking wardens with taste :p

Both of those Renaults look fantastic tbh.

I agree :D

They do. Might look at the Megan next, hadn’t considered it before that pic

The Megane E Tech reminds me of the Volvo EX30’s.

Exterior is quite a “Sporty” looking thing, colour combination with the Gloss Black roof and trim helps (Although will need maximum safe detailing efforts to keep from looking a swirly mess over time)

Interior is great too, initially felt the light coloured seats looked naff on photos but in person they are quite nice.

Just gonna diagree slightly on the Megane, it looks like it's a hatchback size car styled like a mini SUV because of the platform or whatever doesn't allow it to look like a normal hatch due to battery pack, height etc. so not a big fan myself

Scenic looks better imo, the platform works better for a family crossover type car

After many months back and forth, I've been offered a full refund less mileage deprecation at 0.45p/mile on my Volvo EX30 Twin Ultra.

Shortlisted a BMW iX1 or Audi Q4 e-tron as a replacement, but still open to suggestions - up to £50k.

As a "wish-list" based on 10 months driving an EX30, I'm primarily looking for a high-up cabin with less road noise and fairly decent adaptive cruise control support.
I've also never managed more than 220 miles so a bit more range would be nice. I've spent a bit too much time charging at a stop to get an extra 20 miles to get me home on my regular routes.

Whilst the EX30 is quiet, I've been in far older ICE BMW's that are quieter, so it must be possible!

If anybody is curious about an EX30; had I opted for the lower-spec £32k base model, I'd have probably accepted the issues - the majority of my grievance comes from the very quickly diminishing battery<>performance output, amongst software issues which have ultimately caused damage to the car.

It is so tempting when you have the power and acceleration isn't it? The Leaf has terrible torque steer as well, that's when you can actually put the power down, the roads are so greasy around here that is impossible to do right now. We needs a good downpour to clean the roads but we haven't had any proper rain for weeks which is crazy at this time of the year. The River Spey is really low and looks more like summer levels rather than early spring when it should be full.

Like anything, all so subjective but agreed the Scenic is nice.

100% agree that it does have a slight identity crisis but back on the terms of styling being subjective I really like it personally.

Scenic would be the more practical car since boot space is small on the Megane however for our needs it’s totally fine, I’ve always preferred smaller, nippier cars and driving a 2.2 Tonne Fridge Freezer on wheels daily confirms this more and more each day

Yes, very greasy, combined with the EV torque it isn’t a great combo. I do miss AWD! That said, I’m finding the power more usable on a lot of the roads I drive since i don’t have to worry about bumps and potholes *quite* as much as I used to. Other than last night my driving has been pretty chill though. I love not having the constant gear changes in traffic.

EV recharging pod quote next weekend :)

It’s so dry now my car is covered in salt dust.

As predicted the Labour government are already having to indicate that they're going to start walking back on the self imposed harm of EV sales targets...

Expect further 'adjustments' to the 2030/35 targets in years to come as reality increasingly catches up with policy.

That literally says the targets aren’t changing

Just flexiblities and reductions in fines which on balance is probably a reasonable way forward without diluting the mandate too much

Very nice that was one of my top two when I was looking for my car, in the end went with the EX30

Why do you keep coming back to this thread with FUD and rubbish. The article actually says no alteration

"Although the Business Secretary declined to specify the precise nature of the changes discussed, insiders indicate that “nothing is off the table.” However, government sources swiftly countered the idea of an official change in stance, insisting there is “no alteration” to the headline targets of the ZEV mandate—though they have long hinted that “more generous flexibilities” could be introduced to accommodate manufacturers."

We get it you don't like EV's, and you don't think they succeed, but don't pretend you are some sort of oracle, just another Googler that tries to spin what you can't read.

You can come back and quote me in five years but there's very little chance that the ZEV mandates for 2030/35 for 'headline' requirements' remain unaltered. They've set targets that aren't in any way compatible with reality given the technology, what other counties are doing and what they claim to want to achieve with the economy generally.

I don't like the stupid illogical thinking that's behind the EV mandates. I'm quite happy for people and businesses to puchase EV's, with their own money when it suits them do so.

Did you mean countries?
Try ethiopia for embracing electric cars.

And don't forget Norway with 93% car sales being evs.

The £15k fine was a bit much but the other thing that people also forget is you can self generate credits by reducing your fleet emissions generally so you didn't actually have to sell 22% or what ever the target was for last year to meet the mandate. They can also bank credits from previous years to use in future years.

Ah yes Norway that made itself rich of selling fossil fuels to the world and which massively subsidises EV's to the point that it's undermining some of the claimed environmental reasons they're pushed for in the first place.

and Norway is a country with a very small population vs the UK that generates nearly 90% of its electricity from the one source of 'renewable' energy that's actually worth bothering with in northern latitudes for a high % of a nation's electricity (but only where there is the geography for it which there isn't in the UK) namely hydroelectric.

The UK on the other hand has properly messed itself up with ridiculously intermittent wind and solar power and the remaining gas generation and imports are already barely covering demand with some quite close calls just this year.

And Ethiopia a country with a population around twice that of the UK with a small, fraction of the vehicles that the UK has (around 1.2 million vs over 40 million) most of which are probably still used for local 'taxi' services in the cities, and which is a country which does actually have the state quite heavily subsidise the price of fossil fuels (unlike the repeated nonsensical claims that countries like the UK heavily 'subsidise' fossil fuels based on the ridiculous premise that something being taxed less heavily than someone thinks it should be constitutes a 'subsidy').

And of course, a country with massive hydro potential around 90% of its current demand for electricity and which sits much closer to the equator making solar power a better bet for the rest, especially when the national grid is currently next to non-existent with small private solar and diesel generation making up a lot of the total current capacity.

What compelling examples to base the UK's governments mandated transition to non-fossil fuel vehicles on!
