EV general discussion

Is it a tiny teeny garage?

Just big enough for my toys :D

Garage will do if you can park your car near enough to use it and you can get power to it.

It’s a condition of the grant that you must have off street parking.

Unfortunately our garages are horrible, hateful asbestos things that are literally slowly becoming one with the earth again so I'd rather not even attempt to drill in to them. Also the garage has no power so I'd have to run a supply through the garden. All good if we owned the place, but I'm not spending thousands on someone else's home.

@Diddums could you park up next to the garage door?

As above, I probably could but the faff and cost just isn't worth it.

Edit: I've asked this before but seem to have lost the bookmark, what apps can I use to find local chargers? I seem to recall there being one which allows folks to rent theirs out too, is that still a thing?

@tamzzy did your M3 come with a lead or is that another expense I need to factor in?

Cheers :)

Yeah, the insurance groups are only guides, based on factors like repair costs and the car’s safety and security features. There's a ton of factors alongside that, like your personal risks (postcode, age, etc.). You'd need quotes for a more accurate comparison.

Quick one for you guys - to PPF or not?

Full PPF is £3.5k! Or a good ceramic coating is £650.

I'm a keen detailer myself and I know how to look after a car (my 140i had mint paint when I sold it earlier this year, owned for 6 years from new).

So is it overkill? Or I could get ceramic coating and front PPF for £1600. Worth it?

(this is for a brand new Model Y)

Zapmap and ABRP (a better route planner)

You need to do your own man maths. Everyones mileage can and will differ (literally and figuratively)
I think the biggest thing swinging it to an EV is work have said we can charge here, think we have 2 or 3 charging points. So that's a huge portion of my driving 50 miles a day where the electric will be free.
Do companies get big incentives for charging points.

I'm not sure I'd bother with either on a Model Y, or any other mainstream depreciating car TBH. Especially as you are good with the detailing products yourself, just do what you did with the 140i, pocket the cash and shrug off the inevitable stone chips.

Not Tamzzy but if you mean the Model 3 then the pre highland cars (pre 2024) come with both a type 2 cable and the mobile connector (granny charger but can do up to 32A with the right adaptor if you want to). Model 3's (and presumably the Y as well) after this point only have the Type 2 cable as standard. I think this might be the same for a lot of newer EV's as well.

Personally, it's a white goods car why spend all that money on it? You certainly won't get £3.5k of value when it comes to resell the car

Don’t bother.

I wouldn’t even bother with the ceramic coating unless you are doing it yourself, especially if you don’t own the car outright.

But just know modern paint is **** and it will chip within 5 minutes, particularly with the low snub nose like on the Y.

The bonnet will catch a lot of stones due to the angle. Get a decent ChipX kit and make pease with it.

Just tagging on to this - as this will be our first lease, how bad are companies with stone chips and stuff? We'll be doing moon mileage so it WILL get chips, I just need to know if there's anything I can do to prevent facing a £lol bill when we hand the car back.

They are usually ok with small chips if they follow BVLRA guidelines

Also they don't like amateur repairs and the charges are less than a professional repair so I always leave the damage instead of trying to fix it

Thanks.

The BMW had some of the usual bits and bobs on the bonnet and front, but not much. I would imagine the rake of the bonnet on the Tesla opens it up more for chips.

I might have a go at a coating myself, as I have some bits left over and see how it goes.

I'll certainly miss the lower car, and the ease of cleaning the roof! The Tesla sits so high! Not sure if it's a done thing by lowering it a tad (not slammed! Tastefully!)

They allow a certain amount of chips per panel (think it varies between 4 and 8), if you go above that they charge you the rate to fix the panel (approx £2-300). However when you hand it back they do take into account the mileage and not just the age and you would usually get a "goodwill" gesture against any bill. Then just challenge it, more often than not you will get away with it as they then can't prove anything as the car is usually sold at auction within days of it going back, so all they've got is a photo.

Thanks, but we don't have a driveway unfortunately. We have a garage, two gardens, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and no driveway. You couldn't write this stuff.
Probably too much of a wait/faff, but they are now piloting pavement charging where I live, company called Kerbo are doing it in Leeds. Can't find any updates on how well the pilot is going, but essentially they cut a channel from your property across the pavement, you then push your charging cable into that so it's not a trip hazard and plug into your car. Not sure how well it stands up to idiots who might try to mess about with it either when charging or not in use.

Kerbo charge have been around ages now, no idea why they need to do a pilot on a proven workable solution.
