EV general discussion

Planning the replace my wife's car with an EV - the only car that meets our needs (as it's though an EV scheme at work, so limited choices) is the Tesla Model Y or 3. (It needs a tow bar - for a bike rack)

18 months ago I replaced my car with an EV through the same scheme - back then a Tesla would have been ideal too but Musk decided to go up on stage and give a Nazi salute so we wrote that idea off.

Dear God, why does Musk have to mouth off every time I want to buy a new car. If he would just shut up we would probably have two Tesla's by now.

So, do I hold my nose and buy the Tesla - or put an expensive aftermarket tow bar on our current petrol car. (Dumping our current car and getting a Tesla will work out a fair bit cheaper)

This Tesla/Musk discussion has been had countless times on here, and you'll have people telling you things from both sides, but ultimately how much do you care?

Probably not that much - I think I'm taking myself down a rabbit hole a bit here. Instead of buying a Tesla last time I got a BYD, obviously there are ethical issues there as well....

At the end of the day the difference in keeping what I have and going with the Tesla is about £200 a month in favour of the Tesla - I suspect I'm going to sit on the decision for a couple of weeks and then ultimately go with the Tesla.

It just sticks in my craw a bit, that's all but I guess the thing about going down the ethical buying rabbit hole is that you'd end up buying nothing ultimately.

I still wish Musk would just shut up though.

ethical issues

If you decide on what car you want based on "ethical issues" then I think you'll find very few options.

Would you like any of the manufacturers that the Nazis gave us instead?

Do you enjoy supporting Amazon who's staff have to pee in bottles?

Do you like your Chinese stuff that may well have been made with slave labour?

Do you enjoy the batteries in all your gadgets, conveniently ignoring all the lives that are lost farming the materials?

I think it's time to put your big boy pants on and stop giving a **** what other people think tbh.

Just on the Supercharger pricing discussion earlier. I've just checked in the car and under Settings -> Navigation, you can select "Only Add Superchargers with Tesla Pricing" - that will avoid the EG On The Move/similar ones (you can still see them easily enough on the map though, should the need arise).

Awesome, thanks :)

You do you, I personally won’t support a guy who is powerful enough to kill Ukrainian civilians because of petty whims.

But go right ahead and try and compare now to the Nazis who came to power 100 years ago.

It’s one thing saying you don’t give a crap if Musk has deliberately interfered with Starlink that helps Russia kill Ukrainian civilians, at least own that. I don’t even mind if you falsely try to claim supporting Musk has no bearing on how he uses his wealth. Just stop pretending and deluding yourself your choice to buy a Tesla is no different to buying a ******* Duracell battery because it was made in China.

Used an Evyve charger last night to try as only 48p at weekends. Works out cheaper than fuel and id rather get money into the charge network where I can.
Slick units and tend to pop up for &Charge challenges to earn km credits. I like the graph read out here too. PHEV hence maxes out at 100A and ~400V but nice to have CCS option.

And the rest of my points then? People dying in lithium mines, people sacrificing their humanity to feed their families so you can have the latest fancy phone? Or does your moral compass only point towards Musk?

If you're gonna try and preach to people, at least be consistent.

A lot of OEMs are very clear on sourcing which will be well clear of artisan COBALT mining, not lithium. The nickel is as much of a concern for cutlery as the cobalt in your phones, LFP one way to avoid that.

Unfortunately with most rants Dunning-Kruger kicks in and you end up telling people how much you don’t know rather than understanding.

Prob need to put those big boy pants on Diddums, oh and that’s trying to do a funny either.

Kinda proving my point then isn't it?

You're also very clearly showing your lack of understanding of supply chains. Yes your suppliers will have fancy little logos on the bottom of their email signatures telling you that they're responsible and ecological and all that guff and if you're naive enough to believe it then I'd revel in that. Sadly here in the real world money talks and if someone says "we've got 500 tons of nickel/cobalt/lithium up for grabs at half market value" then you can bet your very existence that it'll somehow end up in your supply chain with many difficult questions being avoided.

The rest of your post is your usual guff, which is to wit what Rosie Jones is to comedy.

I think we all agree Musk is a **** but everyone can draw their own personal lines on how much of an issue they have with it. I'm not sure what it's bringing to the EV discussion at this point.

Exactly, but every time someone makes their dislike for Musk as a reason for not wanting a Tesla, should they be called out by the usual suspect(s)?

I’m not gonna lower myself to your level, most this you vote on like the above are literally what you have Googled, not actually done for a job…

But for example when OEMS are making their own cells they know exactly where they are from - it’s part of the sustainably missions and evidence based narratives they form part of product launches.

This is where you have compared battery cells to FairTrade bananas.- very naive and sad really also throwing an insult in whilst you are are it. Poor form.

Oh and chucking a disabled person in too? Chill bruv.

Decent attempt at distraction though when you muddles your lithium and cobalt. I’ll give you that.

Blame Diddums.

The target audience for your post likely included him and he likes it. Amazing!

"I'm not gonna lower myself to your level" followed by a long and tedious post lowering yourself to my level. Never change Jonny :D

And no, I didn't google any of that, I know from experience. Not via the grapevine, not on some internet blog, from actual, real world experience with my very own two eyeballs.

And apologies for the insult, Rosie Jones really didn't deserve that.

I frankly find it hilarious that people will happily buy products from Nestlé who literally caused 1000's on infant deaths direct by their own marketing and physical promotion of baby milk in countries without clean water, but worry about some guys words rather than actions. Yes stand on principals, but don't be ignorant or all the other crap you support, or you are just a big fat hypocrite.

Exactly my point. Most major companies will have stuff that's conveniently omitted from their "about us" sections on their websites. Some are responsible for entire genocides, yet we have to hear about how bad Musk is because we bought a Tesla. The world is a horrible place full of horrible people. Deal with it.
