EV general discussion

A quick one, has anyone bought or considered a polestar 2/Tesla model 3? Which did you choose and why.

The polestar to me seems the one which is better value for money.
I chose a Polestar 2 for a few reasons:

1) I much prefer the look of the Polestar
2) I wanted something unique. There are a LOT of M3s
3) I wanted something with a driver display/cockpit.

The P* is great. No regrets.

Looks like its very possible I'll be joining the Electric community, We've been offered much more than our Micra should be worth (Thank you chip shortage), as a result we've gotten a good offer on an 40kwh N-Connecta Leaf, Also test drove it today, I'm convince Electric is the future, That instantaneous power delivery is wonderful, the car itself, very comfortable nice plush seats, well equipped and very spacious all round.

So the Leaf uses the Type 2 Connector, someone mentioned before its an old style connector? Someone able to elaborate more on that? I had a check on the zap-map thing and clicking on the many charging stations around the UK, its all Type 2, so i'm a bit confused by that. (Also the mileage we do as a family, we very rarely do anything 100+ miles a year, maybe twice a year if I have to do an airport run up to Birmingham.)

The Type 2 connector is what you'd use when charging at home, the problem is the Chademo connector that you'd use when making longer journeys, you'll be limited on where you can charge as CCS connector are the standard being fitted to all new cars.

Cost to charge and miles from a full charge if you do?

Are there adapters for those?

Unexpectedly we've now upgraded to the E+ N-Connecta with the 62kwh battery for an extra £10/m, Was not expecting to order that today, build time is sometime in December, really looking forward to it.

Nice. My wife and I initially looked at getting one of those through my work's salary sacrifice scheme. Seem that it was a 22 week order time for a "custom order" so in the end went for a Tesla Model 3 LR which was down for a 14 week wait for custom order.

We take delivery on the 7th September so worked out at 8-9 weeks in the end.

Similar scheme 7wks from placing order, didn’t customise though just went for stock. Figured I’ll try electric then maybe Tesla in 3yrs time.

I've been very impressed with our corsa e so far.

I never set my expectations higher than 'I own a vauxhall corsa', but I have found it a very nice place to be for all types of driving. Obviously the EV aspect means smooth power delivery and a quiet cabin. I also find the handling very good and it's still surprisingly fun to throw around back roads. The added weight of the EV and the stiffer dampers also make the ride feel better than the equivalent ICE versions.

We have a leased Cupra Ateca going back in June next year and an EV might suit our basic needs really well.

My company car scheme is entirely hybrids or EV’s and the pricing seems quite attractive. The scheme is a fully maintained & insured salary sacrifice setup and the net costs of a highly spec’d Q4 50 or equivalent is between £550 and £600 p/m.

I’m currently waiting to see what the pricing is going to be for the BMW i4 as the M50 is looking like rather attractive.

Whilst £600 p/m feels like a lot of money compared to what we are paying for the Cupra once you factor in insurance, servicing, tyres and the fuel savings it starts to make more sense.

Be careful if you have a final salary pension scheme and are due to retire at any time during the lease. A salary sacrifice lease with a final salary pension scheme is a very VERY bad idea.

I am also looking at a Q4 but in order for it not to feel too much like a "give up on life" car you need to Spec Q4 50 Quattro Sportback. When you get to that price with the extras you can get a basic spec E-Tron GT for not much more. I know which car I would rather have if the issues of saloon car practicality are not a factor.

Also look at the BMW iX3. Comes with much more spec as standard for about £60 less per month. Though (subjectively) not as nice looking as a Q4.

Sadly not DB pension for me so this is more about being tax efficient and retaining child benefit along with still putting a good chunk into my pension.

Funny you mention the IX3 as I did spot that it was surprisingly cheap but we like the performance of the Cupra so I suspect it along with the 2wd Q4’s will feel a bit slow once you get past the torque surge. That said I have driven precisely zero hybrids or EVs to date so I will drive a few before making an decisions.
