Because all the other Teslas look meh. Like variations of a Mondeo :D

They look slick and beautiful, each to their own. Some people don't appreciate aggressive-looking cars and prefer slick and minimalistic styling. It's subjective.
 
Would be interesting to know model 3 registration by colour, but the disproportionate(?) number of white ones in cambridge seem a bit anonymous, but the red one vicky had on fifth gear last night.

White is the "free" colour, whereas red costs an extra £2000. Or I think £30+ per month extra on a lease. So there are likely a disproportionate number of white ones. I've seen quite a few around here and most are white in person. I prefer the look of the red or blue myself but the Peal White is quite a nice white. At least, more interesting than a flat white. And I guess as it used to cost £1500 (I think) extra, people feel it's a good one to stick with.
 
How do you know? It (the Cybertruck) hasn't been unveiled yet. It's unveiled November 21st. Perhaps you mean the concept/idea is "meh". Personally I think it'll be a Marmite product and some will love it, we'll see.

I mean't the range sounded impressive for a pick-up .. but you do have a third more fuel than most cars I have ever had.

My pickup had a 700 mile range...

400 miles is pretty average for most cars.

That’s one of the issues with current battery tech. It’s no where near as easy to increase range without increasing cost and weight significantly.

Big tank? I have to drive with an eye to fuel consumption i.e. avoiding labouring on hills to get much over 400 (30MPG but don't get a full 80L in the tank) stick it in sport and won't get more than 370-380.

... we have possibly forgotten the slip streaming strategies that could be employed for autonomous vehicles ? many idiots seem to practice on the motorways though.
 
136 litres (Petrol). It does have a (stock) large fuel tank though, not the standard one most have (which would do around 400ish).

It’ll get that pretty easily on the main road if I’m sticking to ~110kmh/70mph.

With our (removable) camper I’m thinking probably closer to 600 miles (haven’t had it long enough to really know). Probably closer to 550 miles if we are in the US doing 80mph with the camper.

My families Australian BT50 (Diesel) will do around 300-350, but it does have a ton of camper on the back permanently. Presume the tanks around 80L too. They regularly wished they had a larger tank tbh.

@jpaul. That should be “has”. I still have it. Would be overkill for the UK, and tbh overkill for here too most of the time, but designed for people that tow long distances and who spend time in remote areas. It came in handy this summer when there were 400km+ distances between fuel stations.

it’ll be interesting to see if the Tesla Trick really does have a 500 mile range, and if so what price/weight it will come in at.

I’d love to go electric, but the more I read online the less I’m convinced I’ll get the range required. My commute to work is around 28 miles, of which 95% is the M25. In the cold on the motorway a lot of sites seem to suggest I’m looking at a real world range of <100 miles. If this is true, if I compare to my current car to a MG ZS EV from a cost point of view:

MG ZS EV = 44.5KwH battery x 14.9p (home electric rate) = £6.63 full charge for up to 163 range.

Honda Civic = £7.54 to cover my 54 mile round daily commute (42mpg average, £1.25 per litre)

Do any of manufacturers of EVs offer extended test drives? I can’t drop so much money on a electric car for it to not to at least cover my work commute without charge.

One thing that may be relevant Meatball is the average speeds on the M25. If you're doing 70-80 then the range will be less than quoted, but if you're doing stop-start a lot of the time, and only up to 30-40 you're likely to see a much closer figure to the quoted one. (Based on my experience in a Jag I-Pace last weekend on the M25).

It's really counter-intuitive that electric cars do so much better in slow stop-start traffic than they do at higher speeds. Almost the opposite to an ICE car. :)

that’s a good point. The only time I really stay at 70mph is when I’m driving between 05:00-06:00. My work place has installed two Hubster charging points, but their use is prioritised for our 1 (soon to be 2) electric vehicles. I have a driveway at home where a home point can be installed.

that’s gonna be the same regardless of tech. More kWh = more mass and cost.
 
Also you can't just keep adding more batteries to increase range as there are diminishing returns from the weight. Battery and motor tech needs to get better.

Milton Keynes EV Experience centre offer loans of cars for upto a week for £75, they have several to choose from. They allow 400 miles of useage with zero cost, then a cost per mile after that. We've borrowed a couple of cars from them and it was great and very informative, also they don't actually sell vehicles, it is just an information provider. They do however refund the money you paid if you ever end up buying an EV, you just mail them the proof of purchase and your original rental details.
