That’s the point I made. Second was the labour is such a significant part that you may aswell increase the spend marginally for full function and proper AC earthing with regulation.

There's no way the install meets current regs. So one of three things must be true:

1. This socket was compliant at the time of install (i.e. it was put in some years ago).
2. You didn't tell the electrician that the socket was to be used with a 32A EVSE, meaning the sign-off is basically meaningless.
3. The sparky was a bit of a cowboy.

Not sure I understand this one.

If you use a plug for granny charging are you saying it needs a different sign off? If I plug in at my in-laws that's illegal because they haven't had it specifically approved for EV charging?

I think you missed the point.

Boast: "Look at how much money I saved by not paying for a rip-off charge point install!"

Reality: To make that saving, you need to do the work yourself, ignore the safety regulations, and then ensure the installation isn't assessed correctly.

If Fuzz is happy, great (as long as nothing goes wrong). But this really isn't something which should be encouraged.

I think your (other?) point was that the government have driven up the cost of installing EV chargers. I made the point that these sparkies aren't thick and understand the economics enough to bump up the prices as our maths to justify an EV in the first place, means there should be plenty of value that they can take a share in (salary sacrifice = no deposit, tax, insurance + saving on fuel + paying out of gross not net + recouping any lost government benefits <100k or <50k).

Like how am I getting a quote for £425 for a 10 way consumer unit and then a separate labour only quote for £500 for the car charger, lol?
 
Lets get some perspective here, the complexity is in the ev charger itself, the install itself isnt rocket science for a ordinary sparky, all this fluff about being a EV specialist is just another money making exercise, yes they have to cover the costs of acreditation and training, but some of the prices i was quoted a few years back were mad. EV installers were so busy they just chucked out daft quotes because they didnt need the business.

The installation itself is simple, but you need to ensure the DNO is made aware, if you are putting in a seperate CU for the install, you may need to get the DNO to install an isolating switch. You dont even need a earth rod in most installs as the EV chargers have PEN fault detection.

Its another money spinner ala solar installs.

It’s more the issue with grounding and AC, the thermistor in a granny lead will cut demand demand if it gets warm BEFORE a proper event.

In terms of the commando risk, It’s very rare but without a correct ground path and an error the car will use you as the grounding path to the grid’s common ground, and that’s very bad. Which is the purpose of the regulation standards on either PEN detection or physical ground spikes in the ground fitted with the wall unit.

Not sure why dlockers doesn’t just ask rather thanmaking silly statements, proper toys out the pram mentality. I generally enjoy your posting style, are you okay?

The cable can be quite a significant cost if the “standard 10m” install is used, plus the dedicated test equipment needs some return on investment.

Are you on the board for an EV installation firm or something? :cry: You seem particularly invested in justifying an outrageous install cost for a commodity bit of gear.
 
Genuinely don't know where the word soup came from, are you sure that wasnt the born2k post... I was more than clear and then just giving facts on the reasons, you will have noted I haven't said if its excessive or not, I've had one fitted though.... so i saw the time it takes to fit, the hardware fitted and the testing time and equipment so sit on the 'its not a piece of cake' fence.
But then whatss experience of seeing a quote actually turning into work actually worth when we can all post mortem the quote from a keyboard? Got no skin in the game, I used OLEV so was only £550 for a fitted and supplied Ohme. Utter bargain now really.

Impossible place these forums some days - I'll call people out if they start thinking their opinions are fact - and will continue to do so.

Most granny cables are limited so don't pull the full current from the line, but if it's an old house than pre-dates many of the modern regs and hasn't been rewired I'd certainly be concerned with long term high current drain, our old condenser drier used to pull ~3kw and the heat I could feel build up around the plug was a concern after only a couple of hours, I was never that happy, I certainly wouldn't want to go to sleep/or leave unattended with something like a car pulling high current for hours through decades old wiring without having it checked to ensure it's good for it but perhaps I'm too cautious.

Grand scheme of things a properly fitted EV point at £500-1k is peanuts really and so much more convenient than a house fire.
