EV general discussion

Always the same with new tech right.
If your lucky a local expert will crop up and you can avoid main dealer/manufacturer premiums.

If not your forced to pay the main dealer/manufacturer premium.

Over time of course the whole outside the official channels business gets enough demand to support one man bands and small businesses.

The reverse will happen to ICE over time. The whole support network will hit a point where decline starts to hurt. Parts manufacturers, garages etc.
There will come a point when no one will train to maintain ICE. At that point the people able to do so will slowly decline as they retire etc.

Same with fuel stations.
As more switch to EV there will be fewer and fewer petrol stations.

Eventually the old "I don't want am EV because the charging network is pants" will switch to ICE. Where you have to drive a long way for fuel.

Although I wouldn't buy a new EV I would absolutely not buy a new ICE car.

Depreciation on ICE cars could really accelerate at the point petrol stations start closing. You can't exactly fuel an ICE at your house how you can charge an EV

£ vs $ was 1.5 and that was peak due to subprime crisis. But before that was really 1.4 max.

Currently it is 1.25 so you are looking at £80/barrel in 2008 vs £72/barrel. So let’s conservatively say the prices were parity. Our retail price gone up 90% in 15 years with inflation around 2% average across those years don’t add up to the rise.
Hmmm.. your memory may be playing tricks on your mate

And eventually become specialist. At which point I suspect you will get mobile fuel deliveries, much like oil for heating.

"Hi can I order 40 litres of unleaded please"
"sure, your postcode?", "hmm ok, thats coming in at £727.35", "when would you like your tank topped up?"

Then some fun will start, people trying to store 200 litres of petrol in their garage etc (which is already illegal but I would expect they will lower legal limit for ICE fuel storage at some point)

Imagine how risky its going to be to have high value scarce fuel in your car which is really easy to steal in reality... bit harder to drain an EV battery

Tesla’s have the unique park anxiety. When you go to bed and wake up with 5-7miles less range every night. It’s quite unique

Charger anxiety? Buy a tesla.

The standard range model 3 is very good by all accounts. 200+ miles in any weather (closer to 240 in summer) and 170kw charging. Long journeys are not a problem, even with the short range car.

The new one should be even better sans stalks :p

That said, they’ve just opened up most of not all their chargers in Scotland. Over 30 of their sites are open to all now.
My cupra does that with ‘only’ 120kW charging. And it feels like it won’t fall apart when you drive it

Yeah - We went to Florida in November 2007 and it was 2.1 dollars per 1 pound !

conversely ev theft to cannibalize batteries could become a thing ... like cat theft.
]

Definitely a lot more involved process than cutting through the exhaust in a couple of places, not to mention "slightly" heavier to transport, and significantly more likely to kill you.

I'm sure it will be a "thing" in some cases, but I would be very surprised if it becomes as widespread as cat theft.

lol it must be pre coffee......... i genuinely didnt pick up on the cat and thought perhaps there was some wide spread pedigree cat theft going on that i was unaware off :D

(well there is for dogs so...................)

Personally i doubt there will be much car battery theft - aside from perhaps those cars with quick release batteries, maybe they will be bigger risk.

from what i have heard, it is car charge point, as well as car charge point cable which tends to get stolen and all that needs are some good quality cutters

Fixed ;)

How much is the copper in a charging cable actually worth though? Quick google suggests ~£5-6/kg, so maybe £10-15 for a standard 5m cable? I guess maybe worth it if you do a whole street?

Unless you're planning to re-terminate and sell them on as "4.5m charging cable, definitely not nicked"

lol it would be such a shame if a scally trying to steal someones cable happened to get a bit of a shock!.

as for whether it is worth it or not......... i have no idea but it IS a thing. but when has the profit to a scally vs the cost to the victim ever been an issue for them anyway?

my parents car had 2 windows smashed in an over night car park......... all for a packet of worthers original sweets and about £2 in change. (the worrying thing is i am gonna have to park my car in a similar car park for a week in the next few weeks!)

maybe we need to go full robocop and get a Magnavolt security system :D

With an ICE car, you've got not choice than being gang banged for using public charging. ;)

Pah, I have both, so :p :D

Not happening in anyone's lifetime here really is it.

But yes I have bought 105 race fuel by the barrel, not cheap, was about £100 for 25 litres though that was some time ago, probably double that now

lifetime here? i hope so!!!!! i am "only" 47 and wouldnt mind making it to mid 80s, which takes us up to 2060ish. if we have not gone 95% alternative fuel by then then we (as a society) have failed.

i suspect there are some here in their 20s as well.

Not sure. But it's more the theory. But it is possible. Would need to look at the sales of EV vs ICE over time.

I certainly expect to see fewer petrol stations in my lifetime for sure. But maybe not game over time.

I think it won't be long before "you're mad" will be the reaction to buying a new ICE.

For second hand (like me) it will take a while.

Planes and ships are what matter really.
