EV general discussion

Mini Electric is garbage even by EV standards tho.

Maybe but the point is someone could have bought a John Cooper works 3 years ago and be circa 5k up when fuel is taken account for and be in a much better car. Also people thinking the crazy depreciation is only subject to the higher end cars when it pretty much across the board and when people twig how much their monthlies are going to be for an EV compared to a new ICE they will not want one unless manufactures start giving them away.

If you ignore that that Mini was probably acquired SS on a nil deposit/ £280/net lease. IIRC it was even lower than that 3 years ago.

@adam cool dude the assumptions in these thread tends to be that everyone has bought their EV through SS schemes or a company and no one in the right mind would buy an EV privately as it is too expensive and for the most part that is true, so people don't care about the depreciation, all taken care of in the monthly after incentives they are happy with.

It is why private purchases of EVs are quite low, zero incentive, only lunatics like me would bother. :D

Private purchases of brand new EVs are lunatics (or super wealthy/have different maths to all of us/are used to the PCP cycle of being battered every 3 years/keep up with the Jones's).

As we've established, second hand EVs are a "bargain" relative to their asking price.

I took the best of both option, leased it cheap for a few years, then bought it from the leasing company at the end, so I saved £10K over what I would have bought it for new (with a grant) - but I am a private buyer. :)

There’s a hell of a lot of recidivism in this post. 3 years ago (pre-covid) residuals on EVs were excellent, even on the likes of the early Leaf and Zoe. Even just a year ago residuals we’re fine.

It’s only since the media FUD ramped up to bonkers levels and finance costs went though the roof that they have dropped off a cliff.

I appreciate I am in a lucky position, but some peoples posts on Facebook EV groups amuse me, complaining they bought their car and it's lost a ridiculous amount of value in deprecation.

I'm kinda hoping to go this route... don't know if it will be possible but that's a fight for 3 years' time.

Well my leasing company (Arval) were even happy to negotiate at the end vs. what they asked for, got them down to auction price in the end, took a few back and forth e-mails showing justification for the price being offered. :)

That's good to know! Wish I hadn't used the pug as a tip wagon now :(

Media FUD is a bit qualitative..rates, yes. They had good residuals because the market was nuts across the board. They are worth what folk are willing to pay and what folk are willing to let them go for. If I've only paid 250 net * 36, then the car only owes me whatever that maths is.

Nothing a good valet won't sort out, for the most part anyhow.
Haha, "this second hand car you're trying to flog me appears to have been a tip wagon by the previous owner!".

If it's a good deal tho I'm well up for keeping it. As far as cars go it's as exciting as my washing machine but it's certainly functional and so cheap I find it hard to extract from my bills.

Did you have to jump through any hoops to be able to buy it? My paperwork explicitly says it can't be bought by me or anyone in my family :/

I must admit the drop on my ipace in 7 months of ownership is a bit sickening (£9k)
I bought it thinking I had already dodged the cliff edge drop. I was wrong for a variety of reasons (insurance problems, media FUD, the fact EVs are improving at rate and the general UK economy)

it's not that I regret buying the car, I just wish I had not broke my own rule on purchasing costs (I promised I was not going over 30k) and should have waited a bit

however that aside... it is funny. not long ago people were complaining that EVs were a poor choice because they are too expensive even for a 2 or 3 year old one and that they would not buy until parity with equivalent ice cars. well now you can get BETTER than equivalent ice cars for the same price or less.... but somehow that is a bad thing as well.

EVs were apparently a poor choice they were dearer than ICE cars , and now they are a poor choice apparently because they are not.

seems to be some goal post moving going on.

FWIW I think buying any new car out right is crazy but there are some phenomenal 2nd hand 3 year old cars out now. (a face lifted pivi pro 11kw charging ipace for £26k HSE spec is a ludicrous amount of car for the cash imo).
now is a great time to get a 2nd hand EV

What I have noticed a lot recently are people scoffing at those who buy a car on PCP. And im honestly not sure why. . .

i must admit i am completely ignorant to the different finance deals. is PCP the same as a lease? if so that is from what i can tell the best way to buy an ev these days, esp if you can get company car perks on it.

for me out right buying a brand new car is just not something i could stomach the losses on myself but to each their own. and as i mentioned above, i failed to catch the falling knife as well even going 2nd hand.
even so tho, i cant lose as much on the car as it had already lost when i bought it, so there is that at least.

until i got my ipace all my cars had been cash in hand purchases (sometimes with a trade in).... but that is easier done when the money you are handing over is well under £10k

Not that I recall, I just called them up and asked if I could buy it instead of extending the lease, they give me an e-mail address to write to and they sent a quote across a few days later, at which point I laughed and mailed them back saying they were being crazy, and they told me to counter if I was unhappy. Took about a couple of weeks to sort in total, and they also gave me a free warranty that last 6 months as a sort of guarantee. :)

Basically you put down a half decent deposit and end up with a balloon payment at the end of the term but monthly payments are a good chunk lower.

it certainly helped me in my younger days to get a safer car while ferrying my newborn around.
