EV general discussion

Had a bit of a moment in my GV70 earlier.

Was driving down country road, it's cold but the ambient temperature was 2°C

Hit some black ice round a slight bend. Car started sliding and all the safety systems kicked in. I basically had very little control for a few seconds. Luckily no other cars around

New car, so the new 'summer' tyres might not have helped, but I wasn't hooning it or anything.

Heavy cars + summer tyres + ice don't mix.

Just had a look at whats available on nhsfleetsolutions using SS
All prices from: (Usually add £50 for me)

i5- £405
i4 - £335

As it is NHS, don't forget to factor in pension impacts which are significant.

They aren’t as significant as the savings you can make on the tax breaks. Don’t go by that made up crap with the consultants wages. Not everyone in the NHS is on £100k consultant wages.

Basically it depends on your banding.

I'm not and I don't think you can categorically say that. The savings last for the period of the lease, the pension impacts for as long as you are drawing it, that could be 30 years.

You'd need to run the numbers but you absolutely are taking a benefit now at the expense of a benefit later.

The gross price of the Q8 is probably £1000/month, that is pretty significant for someone who isn't a consultant on £100k.

How is the GV70?
Any photos?

I’m not disputing it impacts the pension, I’m just stating the impact is massively exaggerated in many cases.

When you log in to NHSFleet it'll give you a personalised breakdown of exactly what effects it will have based on your salary.

We've got ours through there. The Q8 was ridiculously good value, and the base spec they offer is still a really high spec compared to other cars.

We have a car allowance covering it, so the pension difference was negligible.

When the range rivals that of combustion engines then maybe they will be more appealing.

Its gonna take a while before used EVs that are usable get down to ICE price levels.

Can't come fast enough.

Edit. Thought I was on the most recent page... It was page 1!

Of course it will be worth something in 8+ years.
The same as 8 year old cars today are still worth something.

Sure, the tech will be older and the battery might only have 85% of the original capacity, but the choice is: buy a new one for £80k, a slightly used 3 year old one for ~£40k, or an 8 year old for ~£10k

Will it have 85pc health after that long though? Question not a accusation. I have no idea.

Right now. People see their phone battery life collapsing in 3 years and think the same will happen to car batteries.

People think lots of things, but generally don't do any research, just read headlines on a phone screen and believe that. We live in a world of increasing stupidity and blaming others for their lack of knowledge.

My 2013 Leaf battery is still above 80% capacity. (11 bars on battery health).

Driven and charged almost daily for the 8 years I've owned it.

why would that be the mind set?

so what if wv battery tech has moved on. if the car does what you need it too after 7 years then why is it suddenly just pot luck it keeps working after 8?
personally I got my car at 2.5 years old and I am hoping to own it for 10 years at least
it could fail and I could end up with a big out of warranty repair bill. I hope not but it could happen.
you would not want to hear the bill my mate got for his out of warranty Mazda RX8.... he had to do a full on engine rebuild and apparently this was not unusual. so this isn't just an EV only issue it's high performance cars in general ...

But that's an rx8.
They need that doing as standard. (I believe?).
When I was looking at cars way back, I looked at rx8.. Until I saw stuff like that. Nope!

That's A pretty good report.
80pc health.

Does that mean you basically get 80pc of the range from new?

Because ice cars also lose performance over time (no idea how much)

Yes, give or take. At the moment the range is pretty shocking, probably half what I get during the summer.

But that's just the way gen 1 EVs are. A much bigger proportion of the total available capacity is used for heating.

Indeed. Let’s not use a RX8 as a reliability case study of an ICE.

What are the mileage limits?

I assume tires, insurance and brake down cover is all included.

This is where government need to bring in a right to repair law. or else we'll all be paying £100p/hr main steelership prices.
Some of the modern cars, if anything electronics go wrong , local mechanic can’t deal with as they need dealership level diagnostics.

I don’t know how easy it is to get those diagnostic tools or how much of a cost barrier it is.

But my local tyre pro doesn’t have the computer to be able to calibrate my cars wheel alignment. Apparently there isn’t one for miles around.

Gov can introduce right to repair, OEM can still find loopholes ie putting up cost of specialist tools so that only their dealership or very large workshop will have such things.

It is definitely a worrying trend. Probably also why insurance premiums go up so much all of the sudden as a general trend.

The IDs and BMW look stand out values. I assume these are basic trim and smallest battery variant of the models
