EV general discussion

Same here, no change in the Ohme app as yet. Did you say you would have to now charge both cars every other day, or did I misremember?

I charge my ionic every day the Corsa about once a week. I have the two set up in the Ohme app no idea if that will change. It still charges all over the place with lots of little bits here and there. Hopefully they sort that out before the end of the month.

That’s fine and won’t change under the 6 hour changes.

It’s not 6 hours worth of slots (12 30 min slots), it’s 6 hours worth of actual charging which could in theory be spread over all 24 slots in a given day.

The time resets at mid day apparently, although I do find this odd given the latest ready time is 11am so it makes more sense to reset at 11am. .

Only downside is I charge for around 10 hours a day. Going to add about £100 a month to my bill. Still cheaper than fuel but the gap is getting smaller.

I think that is exactly how it is supposed to work as they predict the most green electricity supply within the time you set it to be ready. If you set it to be ready for 8am, and plug it in at 16:00 the night before, and need to get 60% you might just get one or two 15-30 min slots as it would fill up in the off-peak as preference.

Unless you are getting lots of cheap slots now it should add no where near that to your bill. How may kWh are you putting into the cars in the week/month and how much does your home use?

That's exactly how it works. I sometimes plug mine in around 3pm and I often get half hour slots added to the schedule from 4pm onwards.

You must do some serious milage to do 70kwh per day.

You can charge your second car in the fixed cheap period, you’d have to get a second charger or granny charger.

But if it’s genuinely adding £100/month a second charger will pay for itself in a year.

Likewise, if you don’t have solar, you could switch to Eon for a batter deal (export rates are half what octopus pays).

About 130-140 miles a day at the moment. I usually end up adding about %70 a day charging to %90.

I have a granny charger that came with the ionic. The Corsa only does a few miles a day so it just gets charged at the weekend so not really an issue that would need two chargers.

No solar I looked at eon quickly will need to have a better look see what they offer.

Octopus have put my monthly charge up from £145 to £265. I add about 50-60kw a day give or take. All my current charging is in the cheaper 7p slots.

140 miles is only about 40kwh, that should be achievable within the 6 hours (just).

I used 3.5m/kWh which may have been optimistic for your car/driving. It has also been quite cold so some of that may be preheating.

with Eon, I think you need a compatible car otherwise you are just stuck with the same 6 hours.

With the Mrs' Corsa VXR not really being up to the job with two growing kids. She wants something else, and has some specific criteria, no diesels, must be fast (sub 6 to 60 she says), must have 4 door, fit 4 adults comfortably with bags etc..
She has a short commute during the week or 6 miles each way, then some longer drives on the weekend.

When I bought my 330e, an electric car was totally off the cards, as we do occasional longer trips, usually where there is no charging and having the main car not really suitable for those trips was never going to work...

However, now she is keen to change hers, and we already have a "proper" car with the 330e, could a little long range model 3 be a good idea?

Looking to buy outright with 15k budget we were initially looking at circa 2020 330e saloons, Audi A5, Golf GTI, Merc C class hybrids and things, and then this popped up as a recommended option.

It got me thinking, with a plug in hybrid already on the drive, her short commute, a 7kw type 2 charger at home, and a granny charger available, surely this might be half decent idea?

Sub 6 to 60 is very quick.

You’ll find with EVs, much like many ICEs, that they’re platform based, so there are groups of cars with the same battery/motor configuration.

Take the ID 7.

It’s a 77 kWh battery and a 286 PS motor.

You’ll find the same configuration in other VAG products, as well as some Fords.

That means they’ll perform similarly.

In my experience, 280 BHP in an EV feels much quicker than the numbers suggest, because there’s no kick-down for the gearbox. It feels quicker than my Boxster if you just floor it, and it probably is for the first 30m or so.

That’ll open up quite a few more options for you.

Personally I wouldn’t go near a Tesla. Politics aside, there are some inherent risks which I wouldn’t fancy taking on:

- Parts availability
- Dealer support lacking
- Poor controls / driver display info

There are some upsides, but for me, on balance, I still wouldn’t have one.

Capra Born is a fantastic package, albeit a VAG product which comes with the risks of the infotainment being diabolical. If you’ve seen my thread on my ID 7, you’ll know I’ve battled with VW and my lease company about ongoing issues I’ve had with mine since day one, which still aren’t resolved (and probably won’t ever be).

I’ve heard that Skoda customer service is quite good - this may be a deciding factor when looking at cars.

My recommendation though? Get out and try stuff.

My opinion is my own, and your Wife will form her own :-)

M3 LR's are great fit for your description.

We really need to be cutting red tape and council restrictions on home charging options if you dont have a drive. I live thankfully 5mins from an ionity charger so with my 10 quid a month is 44p to charge per kw. But if if i could trench a cable or have access to the pavement right outside my house i could charge at home. But they dont let you cover the cable with safety mats as your not a worker. Cant do overhead for some reason and wont give you permission to trench or run a cable via the conduit for the fibre. Its just crazy. councils could be raking in extra money saying 500 quid we come dig a tiny trench and you can run a charger cable upto 7kw via it.
